The Mummy Returns but did we want him back?

On the plus side, this game gives you the chance to play as either Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser‘s character) or Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo, from Hard Target).

As the former it’s a run, kick, jump and “kill everything” game, with the initial mission being to find your son Alex amongst the caves, but the end goal is to stop Imhotep from resurrecting the Scorpion King. As the latter you have to bring back the aforementioned man of royalty, run, kick and jump to kill Rick and his family and suck souls to give you some energy, although you start the first level trying to find some canopic jars.

game pic For the graphics imagine Tomb Raider but from a slightly higher up perspective that alters depending on the rooms you enter and watch out for rushing into a new room when the camera hasn’t followed you yet as you’ll miss some of the action. Everything seems rather on the jerky side as you’re moving about which doesn’t help matters.

Sound-wise the game attempts to sound spooky amongst the generic “oof” sounds as you kick and be kicked but it doesn’t really work. Oh, for the problem-solving days of Raiders of the Lost Ark on the Atari VCS which actually had some originality when it came to following the film plot.

Running around the pitch-black caverns, I can’t contain my boredom as I yawn over the excessive unoriginality. If you want to go running and shooting people buy Grand Theft Auto 3 instead.
