Scream 4

In Scream 4, Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey and Gale, who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (played by Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghost Face, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.

The newest installment in the acclaimed franchise that ushered in a new wave of horror in the 1990s is written by series creator Kevin Williamson and directed by suspense master and director of the first trilogy, Wes Craven. The film stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Anthony Anderson, Adam Brody, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, Marielle Jaffe, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin, Lucy Hale, Shanae Grimes, Aimee Teegarden and Brittany Robertson.

Scream 4 is released on Blu-ray (£14.93) and DVD (£9.99).

The Vampire Diaries Season 2

The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) a 17-year-old girl, who falls for a dark 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan’s vicious and malevolent elder brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) returns with a plan to wreak havoc on the town and also to plan a revenge against his younger brother. Both brothers begin to show affection towards Elena, mainly because of her resemblance to their past love Katherine Pierce. It is revealed that Elena is descended from Katherine, who eventually returns with plans against the trio.

It is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a town charged with supernatural history since its settlement of migrants from New England in the late 17th century. Other story lines revolve around the other inhabitants of the town, most notably Elena’s younger brother Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), Elena’s best friend Bonnie Bennett (Katerina Graham), Elena’s close friend, Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola), Elena’s childhood friend, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) and Elena’s childhood friend and ex-boyfriend, Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig). The town’s politics are orchestrated by descendants of the original founding families, all comprising a “Founders’ Council”. Some of the founding families of Mystic Falls include the Salvatores, the Gilberts, the Fells, the Forbes and the Lockwoods. They guard the town mainly from vampires although they seem to be oblivious on other supernatural threats like from werewolves

The Vampire Diaries Season 2 is released on Blu-ray (£36.49), DVD (£27.99) and Season 1 & 2 Blu-ray (£43.99).

Red Riding Hood

Romantic fantasy thriller. Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons).

Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie’s older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life.

Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon’s arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. Panic grips the town as Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast-one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect…and bait.

The Big Lebowski Special Edition

The Big Lebowski, a casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen brothers (Ethan and Joel), seems like a bit of a lark and the result was a box-office disappointment. It’s lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned?

And where else could you find a hair-netted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins?

Special Features:

  • The Dude’s Life
  • The Dude Abides: The Big Lebowski Ten Years Later
  • Flying Carpets and Bowling Pin Dreams: The Dream Sequences of the Dude
  • Interactive Map
  • Jeff Bridges Photo Book
  • An Exclusive Introduction
  • Making of the Big Lebowski
  • The Lebowski Fest: An Achiever’s Story
  • Photo Gallery
  • Scene Companion PIP
  • U-Control: The Music Of The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski Special Edition is released on Blu-ray (£15.97).

The Referees

How can a few crucial minutes in a football match change the life of an entire family? How do the “men in black” feel when they are attacked by supporters?

The Referees, also known as Kill The Referee, unveils the lives of several professional football referees at the EURO 2008 championship; amongst them, the English referee Howard Webb, who provoked incredible controversy when he gave a penalty to Austria just before the end of the match with Poland, and the Italian Roberto Rosetti, who refereed the final.

Now, I have to say that I hate football. I just find it incredibly boring, so I’m not likely to vote a preference for this one. Watching the trailer, that hasn’t changed my mind.

The Referees is released on DVD (£10.99).
