Snooker star Bill Werbeniuk dies ages 56…
Canadian snooker star Bill Werbeniuk died of heart failure, aged 56,on Monday.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 14th January 1947, he became a cult figure in the80s because of his ability to drink copious amounts of lager during matches.
Bill joined the professional circuit in 1973 and reached a career highesteighth in the world in 1983, also reaching the world championship quarter-finalsfour times and made the highest break of the 1985 event with a 143.
In 1983, he came runner-up to Steve Davis in the Lada Classic and was partof the winning Canadian team in the 1982 World Cup.
However, his career came to an end when inderal, a drug he used to help hisheart cope with the large amounts of alcohol he drank, which he claimedcounteracted a tremor in his arm, was banned.
His last professional match was his 10-1 defeat to Nigel Bond in the preliminaryrounds of the 1990 World Championship, after which he declared that he’d drank24 pints of extra strong lager and eight double vodkas and still wasn’t drunk.

A new DVDfever.co.uk forum…
Today we announce a new forum which can be accessed by clicking on the logo(right), and I’ve kickstarted it off with a thread about the new BBC Threebranding plans.
For the time being I’ve decided to make it a moderated forum. I may chooseto make it unmoderated depending on how things go, but the last time I did thatit ended in disaster.
The benefit of this new forum is that it’s subscription-only, in that it’s freeto use but you need to supply a valid email address in order to confirmregistration and thus post to the forum. As such, if anyone does make obsceneposts it will be easy to track down those responsible.
I can’t transfer the content from the previous forum but may bring it backif this one goes belly-up, but it’s down to you all what you make of it.

ITV Digital: You get to keep the box…
Once upon a time there was a company called ONdigital, who then changed theirname to ITV Digital, and more recently changed it to ONdigital 1998 PLCas they were put into liquidation and all assets controlled by Grant Thornton.
The plan was, for everyone with a digibox which was loaned to them, as opposedto one bought outright, they were asked to pay £40 to Grant Thorntonso they could keep the box, or phone the number and organise a collection. However, it’s understood that a number of people tried to arrange a collectionbut no-one bothered to turn up.
Now, Granada and Carlton have confirmed that they’ve paid £2.8m to GrantThornton to save face by effectively buying the boxes and giving them to usall for free. Given that there are 990,000 of us with such boxes, that makesa price of £2.83 per digibox, quite a comedown from forty notes.
Just so that you know this isn’t a wind-up, check an ITV channel on yourdigibox and it’ll display a message. Press ‘red’ and you’ll get the confirmation. This message only appears once, so you won’t get a screen-filling messageevery time you try to watch one of their channels. However, there’s usuallysod all worth watching on those so you won’t come across it too often.
Personally, I’ve got two ITV Digiboxes – one relating to a VIP subscription, which gave me access to all the channels, bar the pay-per-view ones, and soI would update my review as and when new channels were added, while the otherwas around £50 from a QXL auction, one of a number of digiboxes put onthere by ITV Digital which were sold under the usual prepay terms.
I never did activate the card for the second box as I could never work outwhich six channels to pick, and never needed two subscription channels at oncethat I couldn’t get through Sky, and before you knew it… ITV Digital wereabout to go down the dumper.
So, that’s it for ITV Digital. So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye, but at least Johnny Vegas got a house out of doing the adverts, whereas Munkehended up as an extra in an episode of The Office.
January 20th :Red Dwarf on DVD, back in its original format…
If there was ever a travesty, it was with the ‘remastered’ versions of thefirst three series, cropping them to 14:9, adding unwanted special FX andsticking in that chronic so-called “film effect” when it wasn’t wanted.
So, now, we’re back to the original 4:3 fullscreen versions of this excellentsitcom starring Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Norman Lovett and DannyJohn-Jules, which comes on two discs and a fair amount of extras.

The Living Daylights – why no DVD…?
Thanks to Mukesh Jain for his comments in the DVDfeverforum, stating that the reason for the lack of appearance of a single discrelease of The Living Daylights is down to rights issues with regardsto the Sam Neill test footage in the original release of the disc.
Apparently he’s denied permission for the footage to be re-released, andstates that original copies of the disc can sell for up to £60 on eBay.
However, the disc itself does appear to be included in the James BondCollection DVD Boxset, details of which can be found by clicking on the’Living Daylights’ cover (right).

BBC Three: Your chance to make a difference…
Yesterday we posted a message on how bad BBC Three’s prospects could be when it begins broadcastingon February 9th 2003, in place of BBC Choice.
LOGO FREE TV, a website dedicated to ridding our TVs from onscreen clutter, has beguna campaign which allows you, with a single click, to email the BBC Three/Choice controller StuartMurphy (right), plus other BBC dignitaries, in the hope that they’ll see sense.
What’s essential also is that we email them daily in the hope that they get the message.
I’ve just emailed them with:
- “Dear BBC,
I’ve seen some of the plans online for BBC Three’s output once it begins on February 9th and itlooks quite depressing in terms of the onscreen graffiti that you plan to spoil it with.
After the terrible mess that Stuart Murphy has made of BBC Choice I can’t believe anyone wouldput him in charge of a channel again.
What’s he done? Stuck “NEW” over programmes that are obviously new, placed scrolling bannersDURING programmes to advertise what’s coming up next, as well as trying to advertise the nextprogramme by throwing three orange spinning blocks all over the screen, or – as happened duringan episode of “24” – purposely placing a VOICE ANNOUNCEMENT *DURING* that programme at a timewhen no-one was talking.
God knows what this man has planned for BBC Three but I wouldn’t trust him to look after agoldfish after seeing how incompetent he is.
I almost thought he had some compassion when I asked him personally to remove the orange spinningblocks during episodes of the excellent Queer as Folk (USA) and they never came back. However,as the Season 1 finale closed with one character at near-death and sombre classical musicplaying in the background, a chirpy continuity announcement was dropped in to advertise thenext programme.
DOGs, onscreen logos, continuity announcements, screen-scrunching up, all the other things I’velisted about that make a mess of the programmes I’m trying to watch – none of it’s necessary.
Stuart Murphy – you have the chance to make a decent channel for the 21st Century. You only getonce chance in life to screw something up and I hope you don’t grab it with both hands.”
January 13th :Men in Black 2. The sequel. Wanted or not. On DVD…

Doctor Who returns on Audio CD…
For years, fans have been calling for a return to the small screen forThe Doctor, yet it never seems like it’ll happen. However, there is good newscourtesy ofDVDfever.co.uk reviewer Liam Careywith the first review for the series of audio CDs produced by Big Finish,in which many of the surviving actors reprise their roles in new adventuresand there’s a link to the website from which you can order them.
The first adventure, The Land of the Dead features Peter Davison andSarah Sutton but, before you get to that, this link wil providesome info about these CDs before you read the first review.

BBC Three: How bad can it get…?
On February 9th, BBC Choice will become BBC Three. Last month we warned thatyou shouldn’t trust the controller of both, Stuart Murphy, given howunderhand he’s been with the former channel.
Now click on the link and discover just how bad things can get. If you thoughtit was bad with BBC1 showing an “Independence Day” trailer over the quietclosure of “Dot’s Story”, or hate the shouty voices of continuity announcersat inappropriate times, such as when a character’s life hung in the balanceat the end of “Queer as Folk (USA)” and we heard a cheerful, loud promotionfor what was on next, then click on that logo and tell the BBC what a chumptheir BBC Choice/Three controller is.

Kate Russell returns to TV…
There are many of us who still miss [.tv], its programmes about games, newtechnology and the advice show, Chips with Everything. [.tv] closed downin September 2001, but CwE’s gorgeous presenter, Kate Russell, is backon TV today on ITV1 at 12.30pm in a new series, Russell Grant’s Sporting Scandals.
Now the bad news – it’s on ITV1 London only.
Now the good news – for SkyDigital viewers – you can still watch it, ifyou follow these instructions:
- 1. Press Services, then 4 (system setup) and 4 again (Add channels)
- Frequency: 10832
- Polarisation: H
- Symbol Rate: 22.0
- FEC: 5/6
2. In the next screen alter the settings to:
then “find channels” and one that comes up is “ITV1 London”. Mark itwith the yellow button and then ‘select’.
3. To view it you’ll need to Press Services, then 6 (Other channels) and”ITV1 London” will be one of those other channels. It’s a bit of a bindto select it but at least you’ll be able to watch the programmes.
The only bummer is that it shares the number “103” as a channel on Skyso won’t take the place of your usual ITV region (mine is Granada, forexample) so I can’t set my TiVo to auto-change to it, and there’s no EPGdata for it so you can’t set an “autoview” for it, but it’s better thannothing.
I got the above info from a site that isn’t mine:http://www.btinternet.com/~c.vowles/Sat/SkyITV.htm
Join the Kate Russell Online Clubat Yahoogroups now for information, pics and contributions from the lady herself.
