ITV Digital: The end really is nigh…
At the start of the month, most of ITV Digital‘s pay channels went offthe air as of 7am on that day, but a few remained.
Television X continued until around Wednesday last week before disappearing, even though for a few days the “subscribe” phone number appeared onscreenoutside of transmission hours.
The last two channels around E4 and Film Four have continuedup until today and will close at some point, the same day that Big Brother 3begins. Some ITV Digiboxes have continued to somehow update the subscriptioncard so that it would continue working until June 30th 2002, were there servicesleft to show with it, whereas others, like mine watched on a Nokia 9850TMediamaster, was made to revert to January 1st 1991(!) which meant that itwas killed off forever. This happened around the middle of last week and Ifirst realised last Thursday when I could no longer watch Scrubs onSky One on that night, while recording E4 on Sky, although both shows getquick repeats over the weekend so it’s not a major hassle.
The digital terrestrial licences are still up for tender so get in touch withthe ITC if you have millions to spend on such a project, and the winner, ifthere is one, will be announced sometime next month.

ITV Digital: a few pay channels left…
“There has been some inaccurate reports in the press”, claimed channel 88for a while, while they updated it. Sadly the one about the service closingdown was not inaccurate, but not all the pay channels have been shut down asof 7am yesterday morning.
E4 and Film Four are currently still running, partly becausethese are broadcast on the multiplex owned by Channel 4 – and not one of theITV Digital ones – but chances are these will be inaccessible after May 31stbecause the ITV Digital cards are updated on a monthly basis and there won’tbe anyone around to tell the cards NOT to expire!
One other pay-channel is around for the same length of time too: Television X,the soft-core porn channel bringing you such delights as Fantasy Night Calls,Naughty Teens, Teresa Scott Unleashed and the one and only Andrea Spinksin Planet Nadia.
Some of these films feature anal sex, so it’s probably poetic justice thatITV Digital have seen fit to royally fuck their subscribers up the arse too, courtesy of the whole cockup that’s taken them off the air.
The image on the right is what viewers will see on most channels, bar channel88 which just adds an extra paragraph of nonsense. Some channels say you canring the phone number 0870 600 9696, but who’s going to be there toanswer the phone and what would they tell you anyway?
May 1st :ITV Digital: dead by dawn…
ITV Digital‘s administrators could not find a buyer for the service,so by the time you read this, the service will be off the air, as of 7am.
The premium channels such as Sky Premier and Sky Sports weredue to shut down at midnight, but as I type (1am) these are still broadcasting, with the rest to shut down at 7am.
It has been rumoured that E4 and Film Four would continue for another couple ofweeks but this is unlikely since ITV Digital will have their licence revokedand thus the multiplexes on which they broadcast the pay channels will besold off. Although the free-to-air (FTA) channels will continue for now, what’sthe betting they will follow suit soon?
All of this completely knackered the government’s plan to shut down analoguebroadcasts by between 2006-2010, of course.
It’s a great shame that ITV Digital have come to this, but it’s as a resultof the ridiculous amount bid for the Nationwide League football TV rights andthe fact that it’s all fallen flat and many small clubs will go out of businesshas been likened to the dotcom slump a couple of years ago when the same thinghappened to them as a result of their being a lack of a market.
