DVD highlights out now and shortly…
A few highlights that are well worth splashing out your moolah on out now or shortly. For each one that’s of interest, click on the image for more info on Amazon:
Harry’s Game (£14.99, Network) is the story of two killers. One is Billy Downes(Derek Thompson), cold-blooded assassin of a British Cabinet Minister. The other is Harry Brown(Ray Lonnen), Captain by rank and with orders to eliminate the IRA hitman in his own backyard- the Falls Road, Belfast.
Both men believe their cause is just. But only one can win. Harry’s game – to find the identity of thekiller and destroy him before his cover is blown.. With powerful performances from Ray Lonnen andDerek Thompson as the deadly opponents, one-time ITN correspondent Gerald Seymour’s tale of managainst man has all the ingredients to keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last moment.
Football Days (£12.99, Dogwoof Pictures) is out now.
Six friends, talent less and unfit, form a seven-a-side football team. They call themselves Brazil. Theyplan to play soccer until they win.
This is a comedy of delusion, of the survival of the unfittest in the face of humiliation and inevitabledefeat. On and off the pitch their movements are the same – shuffling, stumbling then staggering, thepratfalls of endearing losers.
Their most formidable opponents, of course, are the women they love but can’t stand – demanding wivesand girlfriends. Sexual adventures give way to prosaic thirty-something coupledom.
A feel-good movie; a hilarious buddy comedy, with football, sex and mid 30Â’s crisis.
The Chronicles of Riddick Director’s Cut (£19.99, Universal)is out on Sept 19th and sees Vin Diesel reprise his role as hunted fugitive Riddick, his anti-hero characterfrom cult movie Pitch Black. Riddick is on the run.

With Necromonger conquerors threatening the future of the entire universe,Riddick could be the only unlikely hero to save the human race. But will he be interested in savinganything other than his own life? With groundbreaking special effects, incredible action scenes infantastic worlds and an all star cast, including Dame Judi Dench and Thandie Newton, The Chroniclesof Riddick will take you on a thrill-ride like you’ve never experienced before.
Running for 135 mins, the extras include: DirectorÂ’s commentary, Deleted scenes, Riddick Insider On Off,Virtual Guide to The Chronicles of Riddick, Creation of New Mecca, ToombÂ’s Chase Log, Visual Effects Revealed,RiddickÂ’s Worlds, Interactive Production Calendar, Riddick Rises and Keep What you Kill.
Gladiator Extended Special Edition (£19.99, Universal) is out on Sept 12th.
Winner of 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor, Gladiator is here released as an ExtendedSpecial Edition, featuring 17 minutes of additional footage not shown in cinemas. Personally overseen bydirector Ridley Scott, this 3 disc edition, with new bonus materials, delivers the most intense Gladiatorexperience ever!
The extras are as follows:
Crossroads Vol.2 (£24.99, Network) is out next week.
Here in all it’s glory, is a second volume of Crossroads. Meg and Sandy Richardson, Benny Hawkins, AdamChance, (Wee) Shughie McFee – the names still strike a chord in the memories of a generation of peoplewho sat, entranced, watching the latest escapades of the staff and customers of the Crossroads Motel.
Entranced, but usually for the wrong reason! Would the walls wobble? Would the actors dry up or startlaughing mid-sentence? Anything could happen.

August 15th:Take a trip back to the Garden State on DVD…
I’m a big fan of the sitcom Scrubs, starring Zach Braff, whose feature-lengthdirectorial debut is now out on DVD. It’s a simple, yet brilliantly-writtenand engaging tale of a young man’s homecoming after a long time away andthe fate that awaits him.
Co-starring Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard and Ian Holm, this is an unmissable movie.

Taking a look back at Texas on CD…
As things take it easy over the summer, we’re taking a look back at someprevious reviews, including this one fromDVDfever.co.uk reviewer Jason Maloney, back to 2000, when he lent an ear to the greatest hits package from Texas,a band who’ve recently come back to the fore but with some of their mostbland and pointless material to date, so it’s time to remind ourselvesof the time when they had something out worth hearing.

BBC Three’s new whacking great channel logo…
Apparently, since last Friday (although I only watch The Smoking Roomat the moment on there so only found out about it last night, BBC Three’schannel controller and all-round complete moron, Stuart Murphy, has madea massive increase in the size of the channel’s redundant channel logo sothat it mirrors the original intended image as shown on the right.
Stuart Murphy, we know what channel we’re watching. Our digiboxes tell ussince it’s a digital-only station and, hence, no reason for any such logosat all. You really are a complete disgrace.
You can either register your disgust at the BBC Points of View website byclicking on the BBC Three logo, or send an email direct to the idiot himselfby visiting theDVDfever vs. BBC DOGspage and clicking the link to complain to all relevant people at the BBC.
August 8th:Who would believe the tale of The Woodsman on DVD…?
I first heard about this low-budget movie on BBC News 24’s Talking Moviesprogramme when it garnered rave reviews on the independent movie circuit,as it’s far from an easy subject matter to digest.
Kevin Bacon stars alongside his real-life wife Kyra Sedgwickin a drama about a man who’s just been released from prison after 12 yearsfor a hideous crime, and his attempt to rebuild his life following this.
The Woodsmanis online and out on DVD now.
When can a car Crash be beneficial…?
Nothing to do with the 1996 David Cronenberg movie of the same name,DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Helen Jeromelooks at this film which is one that brings strangers together following acar crash and features the talents of Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, ThandieNewton and Matt Dillon in performances that see them playing a differentside to what we’d normally expect.
Crashis online and out at the cinema from this Friday.
Stephen Fretwell releases his Magpie on CD…
