news page picAny Time Now… but when…?

The BBC drama series Any Time Now gained quite a following, but plentyof people were pissed off at the change of day for the scheduling of the finalepisode. Many complained to Points of View, but they didn’t even say whetheror not it would be repeated and Terry Wogan just made a mockery of it all.

Well, after emailing them again after Sunday’s programme, I got the followingreply from them which goes someway to restoring the balance, but not all theway as not everyone will be able to see the eventual repeat, and it won’tbe in anamorphic widescreen as the UKTV channels just crop to 14:9.

Anyone who wishes to contact them about it can do so by emailingpov@bbc.co.uk

“Thank you for emailing Points of View. We did receive a lot of emailsregarding the scheduling of Any Time Now.

Having checked with BBC scheduling we have been told that Any Time Now willnot be repeated on terrestrial television. Dramas rarely are. However theglimmer of hope for you. I have checked with the scheduler for the digitalchannels. They had just come out of the meeting and we have been told thatAny Time Now almost definitely will be repeated on the UK Drama channel inthe new year. Yes I know that this is a little while to wait but be patientand you will be able to see the whole series again in full. Sorry that itis not an instant viewing of the missed programme. My advice would be tokeep checking the TV listings for the digital channels.

I am sorry that you will have to wait a little while for the repeat, here atPoints of View we do try and answers as many of the questions that come inas we can (they are not just put in a file) Keep looking because I know thatthis was a very popular drama and we did get a lot of response so fingerscrossed let’s hope we see it again in the future.

You may decide to wait for the repeat, but I have managed to get my hands ona synopsis of what actually happened in the last episode, I thought if youcan’t wait to find out this might help.”

It’s the morning after the court case. Stevie’s feeling a little queasy atbreakfast but says nothing. Reflecting on the timing of her last encounterwith Johnny, she’s convinced she’s pregnant.

Nora visit’s Dan’s office, and while grateful that he never patronises herabout the case she took against Emily, she finds little comfort in the factthat her legal fees are forty thousand pounds. New York suddenly beckons.

Overwhelmed by the demands of the job, Emily finally decides to abandon allambitions of weather forecasting. Seamus (Mark O’Regan), manager andsycophant, begs Frank to take back his old job and Emily puts the Mogginfamily home up to sale.

Frank in the meantime has been doing some serious thinking about Margaret, and galvanised by his reversal of fortune and getting his job back, declareshis feelings for her – live on air, during a weather forecast. Margaret isboth touched and deeply embarrassed by such a public show of affection. Butthere’s no holding back for either of them now.

Johnny discovers through Kate that Stevie may be pregnant. He’s shocked andannoyed to find out that he may be a father again – and in such a way. Heconfronts Stevie, who admits she should have told him and agrees to do apregnancy test.

Nora and Emily finally come to some sort of understanding of each other bythe point of Emily’s departure. Cynical and cold though Emily’s view of theworld is, it chimes disturbingly for Nora with her own outlook.

While completing the papers on Emily’s house sale, Dan Hardigan is madesuspicious when she signs with a different name. She brushes it off but hedecides to investigate further. When he gives Nora a present of her father’sjournals, which he had rescued from Emily’s auction, his sensitivity andemotional honesty are too much for her and she decides to flee for New Yorkafter all.

Kate and Stevie reunite in their attempt to stop Nora leaving the country. While Emily, now house-less makes plans to emigrate with Tommy Mulligan(John Kavanagh), the girls help Nora take repossession of her home, and verypossibly, her life.

Thanks again for writing in and keep enjoying the show, we are back on airnow every Sunday.

    Thanks again

news page picGoodbye to the 12-certificate…?

It’s true, for the cinema at least, but I wish it wasn’t. The 12-certificatewas introduced in 1989 originally because there was felt to be too large agap between a PG and a 15-cert. The first film to be classified as “12” wasMadame Sousatzka (March 13th, 1989), but only in some regions, whilethe first national film to be a “12” was Batman (August 22nd, 1989).

Following complaints that some recent films have been made inaccessible foryoung children, e.g.,Spider Man andTomb Raider, the new “12a” certificate has been introducedto allow children under 12 to see such films if their parent(s) or an accompanyingadult goes with them. Examples, as have been trialled in some parts of thecountry, include Mr Deeds and The Bourne Identity. This could mean that it’ll be a waste of time hopingfor a quiet audience because how often do young children keep quiet?

Recently I went to see Minority Report, which was a great film, butdo cinemas take notice of the age restrictions anyway? The auditorium at theUCI, Trafford Centre was almost full, but about five rows behind me werea mostly full row of 10-year-old girls that weren’t there to concentrate onthe occasionally-complex plot, but just to gawp at Tom Cruise and chat amongstthemselves. A couple of times I “shushed” them, but did anyone else? No! Didthey enjoy listening to them interrupting the film??

There was a time when cinema staff used to try to sort this out but now theysimply don’t care and even if I was to go and find someone to complain to,I’d have to miss several minutes of the film. Aside from summer blockbusters,week-in week-out cinema audiences do seem to be dwindling a bit and it’s nothard to see why, especially given the competition of new films quickly appearingon Video CDs at your local car-boot stall, or even straight from the internetwith a fast connection and file-sharing program such as Kazaa.

By the way, the “a” stands for “advisory” but may as well stand for “AAAAAAARGH!”
