    Quake 2 pic

First Look: Quake 2 (Playstation) and She’s All That (DVD)…Thanks to Powerhouse PR for the copy of Quake 2 which I received yesterday. Already aclassic on the PC, with Quake III: Arena to follow, not to mention a colourful conversionto the Nintendo 64, the PSX excursion may not be as graphically wondrous as the PC version, but what it lacks in competition with a 3Dfx card, it makes up in colour and the fact thatthey’ve managed to cram the game onto a single CD with some levels altered and some brand newones added.

If you’ve played the PC version, this is certainly worth a look. If you haven’t, you’re aboutto play one of the best Playstation first-person shooters ever made.

Also, thanks to Media Communications for the DVD She’s All That which I also receivedyesterday. A teen cult-classic American comedy, Freddie Prinze Jr and Rachael LeighCook, one of the most gorgeous creatures to walk the Earth, star as the couple who may ormay not get it together (but it’s obvious 🙂

Released on a dual-layer DVD, this 92-minute film also contains a trailer, 30-picture photolibrary, ‘making of’, English subtitles for the hard of hearing, Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack,an anamorphic picture and several cast and crew interviews – another all-round top-classrelease from VCI.

November 16th : Stephen Fry’s just Wilde about DVD…Stephen Fry literally gives Jude Law and Jennifer Ehlethe bum’s rush inWilde, which is online and out now. Will Robbie or Will hit the top spot…?Find out now on mymusic chart analysis page William Orbit – The worst single in the world ever…?One of my favourite pieces of classical music ever is Samuel Barber’s AdagioFor Strings. You know the one – at the end of Oliver Stone’s Platoonwhen Charlie Sheen is giving his “The war is over for me now…” speechfollowed by the end credits.

Well, today I heard something horrible. Many other classical works have beendesecrated before now, but this one had been left untouched. However, I had themisfortune to hear a horrible synthesizer break-forth with this rot, beforethe dance beats kicked in, making it sound like a slowed-down version ofFaithlessSalva Mea.

If Nicolas Cage thought he had problems coping with what he saw in8mm, just think how much counselling you’ll need after you hear thisequivalent of musical rape.

Tomb Raider 4: The Last Revelation PC Demo…Tomb Raider 4 screenshotI’ve recently received a demo of this game from Eidos and after playing for alittle while I can only get into a couple of the rooms but it’s rather entertainingand I’m looking forward to the complete version released later this month.

    The press release reads :

November 13th : Victoria Silvstedt gets ’em off for Playboy on DVD…Victoria Silvstedt was Playboy’s Playmate of the Year for 1997 andher profile appears here alongside Shauna Sand‘s.Playboy Video Centrefold: Victoria Silvstedtis online and out now. First look: Deep Rising…Thanks to Media Communications for the copy of Deep Rising I’vereceived, distributed by Entertainment in Video.

I haven’t seen the film before, but on the plus side this disc is anamorphicbut the sound is only Dolby ProLogic. As for extras, there’s a trailer, butthe also-enclosed “featurette” lasts only three seconds longer and has a fewmoments of chat from the director.

FREE Playstations…?I was knocked for six yesterday at first when I saw that the major high-streetchains are now able to give away free Playstations in a bid to win over thecompetition of the £60 Nintendo 64 and the £200 Dreamcast.

It’s a bit like the Digital TV dilemma though. Yes, the box o’ tricks on whichto play with is ‘free’, but the catch here is that you have to buy FIVE newPlaystation games from a selection of 14 at the same time costing £29.99or more each, so the real cost is a ton-and-a-half but with some top games ofyour choice.

I bought my Playstation nearly three years ago just after the price crashedto £129 and it was good value then, but the new deal is a bargain forthose starting out in the world of the ‘station, especially since thePlaystation 2 isn’t due out here until late next year.

      • 1. Madonna
      • 2. Heather Graham
      • 3. Jennifer Lopez

The Land Girls: MORE deleted footage…Thanks to Jason Maloney on the DVDUK mailing list for pointing out that thereare actually TEN scenes making up just over half-an-hour of extra footage.

Looks like the problem I’ve had with them is similar to that which I have withthe photo gallery. They’re split into two pages of five each, but the secondpage cannot be accessed initially by my Creative Dxr2 DVD-ROM. However, they can be accessed individually by looking at “titles” 11-20 for the tendeleted scenes.

I accessed title 16 (the sixth deleted scene and the first that I couldn’t access in theregular manner) and after that it brought up the second page of deleted scenes so I can viewthem properly.

The full, corrected,The Land Girlsreview is now online.

November 10th : First look: Manchester United – The Treble…And yet another VCI DVD arrived on my doormat yesterday morning :

  • Manchester United: The Treble: The Red Devils come to DVD with atitle that covers every goal from every player in the team throughout thePremiership League, F.A. Cup and European Cup. Instant access allows you togo straight to the goal of your choice and there’s an interview featuringAlex Ferguson and his comments on the season’s proceedings.

I’m having a problem though, on my Creative Dxr2 DVD-ROM, similar to thosefound with Queer as Folk‘s photo library, in that when presented witha menu that has ‘previous’ and ‘next’ options, such as Fergie’s interview andsearching out the individual goals, I can only access the first page of eachmenu, and I have to select the rest manually by skipping through the chapters.Anyone know what’s up with this?

November 9th : Dirty Harry makes a clean break on DVD…Clint Eastwood struts his stuff as the quiffed detective in one ofhis best ever roles:Dirty Harry, which is online and out now. First look: Fever Pitch and The Debt Collector…Two more VCI DVDs arrived on my doormat yesterday morning :

  • The Debt Collector: A new film starring Billy Connolly, Ken Stott,Francesca Annis and Annette Crosbie, which I’d never heard of beforelearning of the DVD release. That said, the picture looks good and is framedat 16:9 with an anamorphic transfer for those with widescreen TVs.

The disc also contains Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, a trailer and English subtitlesfor the hard of hearing.

  • Fever Pitch: The entertaining football comedy with Colin Firthand Ruth Gemmell, with a good-looking anamorphic transfer, framed at1.85:1, plus Dolby Surround sound (as filmed), a trailer, photo library and English subtitlesfor the hard of hearing.

A review of the PAL Laserdisc, released some time ago but costing rather more, can be foundHERE !.

ONdigital Digital Text goes live…ONdigital customers with Philips decoders can now receive Digital Text (channel9) and BBC Text (channel 10) – it’s official and was announced yesterday byONdigital’s Andrew Marre on the ONdigital mailing list (for subscription detailssee my review and the section under the descriptions for channels 9 and 10).

For a while, the occasional beta test download would be briefly available, thelast one appearing towards the end of last week, but now all you have to doto receive it is to perform an “auto update” on your decoder. After about fiveminutes the software should be upgraded.

I haven’t had much chance to check it out yet, but when I do I’ll report backhere and add it to my review of ONdigital’s service which can be foundHERE !.
