news page picGladiator DVD vs. Tesco’s Wharfdale 750…

On Friday, BBC1’sWatchdoghighlighted the problem with Gladiator, Jaws and a number of otherDVDs with the Wharfdale 750 DVD player, exclusively sold by Tesco.

She gave their representative quite a hard time, but the problem won’t goaway and is affecting other discs too.

Personally, I use a Creative Dxr2 DVD-ROM player, with the picture portedthrough to a 32″ Widescreen TV, so have not tested any of the followingstandalone players that are mentioned.

Thanks to theR2 Projectfor the following comment.

“Over the past few weeks we have seen multiple reports of machines not being ableto play certain disks with a large number of extras on them. Our “Fault Club” has 26 faultsfor “Gladiator Disk 2” on the Wharfdale DVD 750 the Grundig 210D and the ProlineDVD-1000. Today we heard that “Toy Story Disk 3” won’t play on Playstation 2 while Colin over at DVD times has alist as long as yourarm of players (Wharfedale DVD750, Wharfedale DVD750S, Proline DVD1000, Grundig GDV210, Grundig GDV210A, Lecson DVD900,Samsung 709, Alba 103, LG 2330P) that won’t play this disk.

I saw a message on uk.media.dvd that suggested that it must be the disks at fault and even that it was R2 manufacturers that arecausing the problem. Well for a start off neither “Gladiator” or “Toy Story” were (I believe) authored or manufactured in the UK butare shipped over from the states. We must also remember that all DVD Disks must stick to certain standards although DVD players donot have an equivalently tough set of standards. Many budget models simply do not have the memory available to be able to follow the verycomplicated (especially given the number of language and subtitle tracks that European editions may have) layout of these disks.

Many months ago I suggested that it was time for someone (perhaps the BVA DVD Committee ) to set up a validation standard forplayers. This should be funded by the player manufacturers themselves and would result in the manufacturers player being awarded a”Badge of conformity”. Manufacturers who join the scheme would commit to upgrade firmware if their player subsequently fails to dealwith a disk that conforms to the DVD Standard. Only this way can consumers be sure that the player they buy will play all DVD disks. Will it ever happen, I don’t know but I do hope so.”

news page picDVD Plus goes into liquidation…

The dotcom business is a volatile one and so many companies are going to thewall not long after beginning. They’ve just taken another high-profile companyto the grave which sold DVDs.

Firstly I’ll say that I take my hat off to anyone who sets up an onlinebusiness, but DVD Plus courted controversy not long ago by starting a new”e-tip” system, in which you paid the amount they deemed to be the “cost price”for the DVD and then had the voluntary contribution of tipping.

They maintain this was a successful system, but my cynical mind believes thatmost of the world’s population won’t pay any more than they have to and sharethe opinion withReservoir Dogs‘Mr. Pink in that, “I don’t tip.”

Guy Rowland from the company had this to announce and it makes essentialreading for any DVD Plus customers.

“I wish I had good news to report, but sadly today that isn’t the case.”

“The basic facts are that DVDplus e-retailers officially ceased trading on Monday 10th December 2000, and are now talking to the liquidators. This came as a shock to pretty much everyone, not least of all staff. “

“Around a month ago, DVDplus stopped taking all advance orders when it became apparent that the company was in trouble. Several attempts were made to sell the company as a going concern, which seemed very attractive since business had gone through the roof following the e-tip scheme, and the company’s profit was becoming healthier by the week (people will be sceptical about this, but it is the truth!). However, capital investment had run out at a disastrous time for the blue chip stock market – many shares from major companies are worth 1/3rd of the value 9 months ago – and it was simply a terrible time to find new partners or investors. “

“The directors of DVDplus have worked extremely hard, and invested huge amounts of time, money and effort to make the business a going concern. It is, I guess, a sad reflection on the market place that the small independent company is unable to compete with the larger conglomerates, but I guess this is equally true for the corner shop as the e-retailer of DVDs. With deals widely available that undercut the lowest rates that dealers are able to purchase, ultimately the economics can’t possibly add up (on a personal note – I think the high rates that studios charge for RRPs have exacerbated this – £19.99 is fine for a major special edition, but not a bare bones disc, and people just won’t pay it. Retailers know this, so the onus is all on them, and not studios or customers, to foot the bill). “

“Liquidation is a horrible, painful business. I’m not sure how it will all pan out, but the guys at DVDplus have advised me that any ex-customers with outstanding preorders should contact their credit card companies, and they will be covered by their card’s own insurance. No doubt there will be plenty of criticism, and maybe some of it will be justified. But I can personally vouch that no-one has worked harder than the directors to treat people fairly.”
