No Hard Feelings is a coming of age tale, of sorts, in which Maddie’s (Jennifer Lawrence – Don’t Look Up) car is repossessed due to expenses taxes on her house which she can’t afford, and she certainly can’t perform her Uber job on roller boots.
Since bartending also won’t cut the mustard, she lands a bizarre job, in which if she sleeps with 19-year-old Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), who’s so introverted, he acts like he’s more a 13-year-old. He can barely do anything for himself, since his parents mollycoddle him, and so comes across like a complete sissy.
Hence, she’s effectively selling her body to get a car, and to the son of parents Laird (Matthew Broderick) and Allison (Laura Benanti). However, she has to date him without him cottoning on the true reason, especially since she’s 32.
There’s a fair number of humourous lines in this, although it’s not exactly a constant bellylaugh comedy, and you can get the measure of the script when, since Percy works at a dog rescue centre, Maddie enquires, “Can I touch your Wiener?”
No Hard Feelings highlights the problem in life, which shows how easy it is for a woman to get a date, compared to a man. And despite a nice piano rendition of Hall & Oates’ Maneater, the film’s premise is completely ridiculous. It doesn’t outstay its welcome, but don’t expect a comedy to watch again and again, especially since no-one’s really putting in the effort.
All that said, when Ms Lawrence takes a skinny dip and is going to make sure the camera stays North of the Equator… well, you’ll have to wait and see 😉
No Hard Feelings is in cinemas from tomorrow, but is not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
