Fresh from box office success and hailed as “compelling and exhilarating – five stars” by The Guardian, Palme d’Or winning drama THE CLASS is released on DVD by Artificial Eye, 15 June 2009. Skive off for this 2-disc special edition DVD shadowing a year in the life of the toughest kids in school.
Rated as “a perfect movie” by Cannes jury members and credited with top marks by actor Sean Penn, The Class features a cast of real life teachers and pupils rather than actors making this remarkable film an essential summer holiday DVD.
Set at the bitter beginning of a new school year, following a gang of rowdy teenagers as they return from their long hot summer breaks with the pains and worries of school life ahead. When Class 4/3 push an ardent teacher to his limits with severe consequences, futures hang in the balance as morals are crossed. Charged with fiery energy, questions of loyalty hang over the students and a life affecting decision needs to be made.
Spread across a 2-disc set, grab a front row seat with an exclusive director interview, a making of documentary and exclusive footage from the classroom rehearsals. With DVD extras giving access from staff room to exercise book, get educated with this 21st century classic.
Adapted from his own book ‘Between the Walls’ and starring real-life teacher FRANCOIS BÉGAUDEAU as Mr Marin, who gets jeered by the kids who are more intent on imposing their status on the street than getting an education. As the roving HD-cameras pick out every attitude-drenched retort uttered and shoulder shrugged amongst the class, the shockingly realistic film hits hard and jogs the memories of our own school life.
The drama never leaves the school grounds, with a mixture of uplifting and heart-breaking moments; Laurent Cantet’s sharply observed fourth film tackles issues of identity, race and discipline. As Marin’s fast-paced lessons role out, way and above the rudimentary texts, he ignites heated discussions and fuels brawling tensions amongst the pupils.
Having received universal acclaim The Class clutched 6 global film awards and received a further 7 prestigious nominations across the globe. Go through the school gates, past the locker graffiti and enter The Class.Extras include: Interview with Director Laurent Cantet, Extra Scenes with Commentary by Laurent Cantet and François Bégaudeau, Rehearsals with the Students, Student Self Portraits, Making of Documentary, Theatrical Trailer
