Originally released in 1989 to huge critical acclaim, Jesus of Montrealstars Lothaire Bluteau as Daniel, a young actor in Montreal who is askedby Catholic priest, Father LeClerc (Gilles Pelletier) to update a versionof a passion play that the pastor has staged in the famous Montreal basilicafor more than 40 years. Although the piece is a classic, in recent yearsattendance numbers have dropped, and Father LeClerc hopes that Daniel canbring something new to the play, and increase audience size.
Daniel recruits a younger more inventive cast and the show becomes a hugesuccess, despite the lack of approval from his employer. Meanwhile graduallyand inevitably the actors find that the life of Christ has an extraordinaryimpact on their real-life existence. Released on vanilla format, Jesus of Montrealis a must buy for all fans of foreign and art house movies.
Written and directed by Denys Arcand, Jesus of Montreal was released to strongcritical acclaim receiving Oscar ® (1990), Golden Globe (1990) and BAFTA (1991)nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was also nominated forthe Palme DOr and won the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989.
More recently, Denys Arcand wrote and directed the critically acclaimed InvasionsBarbares (Barbarian Invasions) which won two awards at this years Cannes filmfestival for Best Screenplay (Denys Arcand) and Best Actress (Marie JoséeCrose.) It will also open the Toronto Film Festival this year (Sept 4th – 14th.)
