Sky unveils its first combined interactive keypad and digital TV remote control.

The development of the TV remote control takes a leap forward today with thelaunch of the Sky Navigator – the first combined digital TV remote control andinteractive TV keypad for use with the Sky digital satellite platform.

The Sky Navigator launches exclusively to Sky digital’s 6.7 million homes inthe UK and Ireland and has been designed to give viewers easier access to theworld of emailing, shopping and banking through the TV, plus many other SkyActive services from just one compact remote control.

The new stylish flip-top remote, designed and manufactured by Amstrad in theUK, is compatible with all Sky digiboxes including Sky+.

It works in the same way as a standard Sky digital remote control but byflipping open the top panel a Qwerty keyboard is revealed inside. SkyNavigator enables easier use of all the main interactive features on SkyActive that require the inputting of text. Viewers can use it to:

  • Type a TV email to a friend via AOL, Talk21, Yahoo or Demon email accounts
  • Place a bet on a range of sports and other events with Sky Bet, Ladbrokes, Toto Pools and Blue Square
  • Send a text message to any mobile phone network from their TV
  • Enjoy home shopping with Lastminute.com, WHSmiths, Kitbag Sports, Argos Additions, Avon, Carphone Warehouse and The Marketplace
  • Check your bank balance and avoid long queues with HSBC, Egg TV and The Woolwich
  • Viewers can even check out their horoscopes and chat to potential dates via Koopid
