Now in it’s 10th season on television, NYPD Blue debuted in 1993 with performancesfrom cast favourites including Dennis Franz, David Caruso, Sherry Stringfield,Amy Brenneman and Nicolas Turturro, as devoted keepers of the peacein New York who don’t play by the usual rules. In spite of the bleakness of thestreets, the chaos of the squad room and the fragility of their own privatelives, the members of the 15th Precinct share a strong commitment to the job -and to each other.
Set against the gritty and volatile backdrop of New York City, NYPD BLUE SEASONONE broke television boundaries with its controversial storylines tacklingissues such as vigilante violence, homosexuality and prostitution. It’s hard-edgedaction and mix of humour, emotion and toughness gave viewers a reality bite ofthe streets of New York, making it a huge hit both sides of the Atlantic.
The series begins by introducing Detective John Kelly (Caruso) and his partnerDetective Andy Sipowicz (Franz) as they investigate a mob-related murder attempton Sipowicz’s life. Sipowicz, on the skids after a painful divorce, is determinedto get mobster Alfonse Giardella at almost any cost. Meanwhile Kelly, alsostruggling from a marriage break-up with his District Attorney wife Laura (Stringfield),begins a relationship with patrolwoman Janice Licalsi (Brenneman) who may knowmore than she’s letting on about the investigation. This first season alsoincludes ‘Friends’ star David Schwimmer in the recurring role of 4B, an unsteadymugging victim.
NYPD BLUE SEASON ONE made history by earning 27 Primetime Emmy(r) Award nominationsalone in 1994 in categories such as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series(Dennis Franz, winner), Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in aDrama Series (winner) and Outstanding Drama Series (winner) amongst others.
