It’s Valentine’s Day (Reach Out and Touch), and the troupe in Bostonare on typically bizarre form. With Larry still away in Detroit, Ally’shallucinations are as bad as ever… now she thinks Barry Manilow is everywhereshe looks! What’s more the female employees are all left swooning with theintroduction of a new Associate to the firm, Jackson Duper (Taye Diggs).Ling pays particular attention when she immediately realises she’s slept withJackson in the past and they must confess to Richard:

Jackson: “Richard, Ling and I got biblical one evening after we metin a bar.”
Richard: “Biblical… you what, prayed together?”
Jackson: “Well, if by “prayed” you mean on your knees…”
    Ling: “Hey!”

Elsewhere in the office, John and Melanie (Anne Heche) go through a toughtime when John proposes to Melanie and she refuses saying she doesn’t believein the institution of marriage, and later admits she doesn’t want children. With stress from their women, John and Richard start sniping at each other, and decide to go on a boys bonding trip to LA (The Getaway) which resultsin Richard getting arrested and the pair involved in legal wranglings to helpwomen they meet out there! Back in Boston, Jackson takes Renee out for a drinkand the pair end up in bed together, whilst Elaine can’t help profusely sweatingevery time she sees him, making Mark incredibly jealous and leaving Jacksonto think all the firm are mad! (Boys Town).

After John and Melanie break up, other couples follow suit. Firstly after Elainecheats on Mark “a little” she then decides things aren’t working between them.Renee and Jackson are the next to go when Jackson decides he still has feelingsfor Ling! Ling, in turn, is also confused when she joins Ally on the hallucinatingfront, seeing Jackson walking in slow motion and Richard in high-speed! WhenAlly suggests that Ling is in love she demands to know how to stop it! (In Search of Barry White).

As for Ally, Larry’s return (Falling Up) brings her utter joy andinitially all goes well between them. Battling in court and betting footmassages on who’ll win, Ally gets much more familiar than she’d planned withLarry’s feet! On her 31st birthday, Larry even manages to persuade his latestclient to sing for her at the bar as a present… the client only happens tobe Sting! (Cloudy Skies, Chance of Parade). But this is Ally McBeal andnothing can go smoothly for her where matters of the heart are concerned. WhenLarry’s attempts to propose to Ally are thwarted by an incompetent waiter (Home Again),and Ally later catches Larry lunching with his ex-wife and being ‘cute’together, could the writing be on the wall for the love of Ally’s life?

Following the huge success of Season Four Part 1, the rest of the Season looksset to entertain just as much. Enter the magical world of Ally and prepare tolaugh and cry in a feast of episodes packed with all the daily trials of love, life and law!
