Project CARS on PS4 – The DVDfever Review

If you go online and want to win, then you will have consider setting up your car. There’s no performance upgrades so the only way to beat a similar player in a similar car is to set yours up to suit the track you’re racing – tyre pressure, gear ratios etc. Use of manual gears instead of automatic will all shave your lap times. There’s literally too many things to go through in this review. The options available to tinker with would qualify for a review in their own right! The correct set-up will give you the edge just as it does in real racing.

Sound is authentic – the cars growling and whining as race through the gears. Tyres squealing as you scrabble for grip round the corners. The music in the menus adds to the sense of occasion too.

Project Cars’ PC roots become obvious in the menus. There is graphics settings section on PS4. Whilst not as many video options as you would find in a pc game there are settings to be tinkered with. This will be alien to console owners as very few games have offered graphics options in the past. There’s Visual FX, Field of View, Authenticity and Movement. You can adjust the field of view, bloom amongst other things.

The PS4 version I reviewed runs at 1080p 60fps. It’s an incredibly beautiful game. The cars look spectacular whether viewed from inside or out.

The game isn’t without its bugs, however, I managed to get my Kart hooked onto the back of another, and the other racer carried on oblivious to my predicament. Another time I was T-boned, and as my car appeared to be at the point of flipping over, it miraculously appeared to get gravity magnets and right itself! In the collision, I lost my wing mirror and that re-grew itself too. Things like this spoil the illusion of realism the developers have worked so hard to create. Hopefully a patch will fix these little quirks and they don’t ruin the game just make it appear a little less polished than say Forza Horizon 2. (I wish my Punto would do the same after some local chavs demolished my wing mirror! – DVDfever Dom)

Ultimately, this is a seriously beautiful game. Whether you should buy it depends on if you’re looking for a serious simulation or not. If your a true petrol-head and prefer Gran Turismo over Need for Speed, then this is likely to be up your street. There’s still a game to played for the more casual racer, if you play with the settings and commit to learning the tracks and the nuances of each car, but for some that may be too much of a chore.

Those who love simulations and want a realistic racer with an astonishing array of features and gameplay mechanics that will punish a heavy right foot yet reward skill are definitely in for a treat.

Thanks to those channels featured for the gaming footage.

Project CARS is out now on PS4, Xbox One, PC and WiiU, and click on the packshot for the full-size image.
