During its 12 year run from 1973 to 1985, the BBCs Superstars programmebecame essential viewing, attracting up to 18 million viewers, as the bestathletes of the era competed against each other in a variety of differentdisciplines. Sporting heroes such as Kevin Keegan and Daley Thompson battledit out for the famous Superstars trophy at the athletics track, in the swimmingpool and on their bikes. However, no-one will be remembered quite in the sameway as Brian Jacks in the gym. Who would have thought that this unknown Judostar would transform himself into a National icon, by redefining the squatthrust as an art form!
This Autumn sees the return of the original celebrity reality show, as JohnnyVaughan and Suzi Perry oversee Premiership footballers, rugby players, jockeys, cricketers, skiers, tennis stars, athletes, swimmers and snooker players competingfor the title of Britains ultimate Sportsman (and yes those squat thrusts DOmake a return.)
For those who remember the original programme fondly, BBC worldwide arereleasing a DVD of highlights of the Superstars series, featuring contributionsfrom some of the programmes most famous participants. For the first time ever,Kevin Keegan will talk about perhaps the incident that has become mostsynonymous with the programme, his spectacular cycling crash, and Brian Jacks, who still holds the Superstars record for squat thrusts tells how Superstarsbecame his life and reveals the strict training regime he put himself throughin preparation for the competitions. With additional contributions from, amongstothers, Daley Thompson and David Vine, the DVD gives a unique insight into thecult TV show, and is released to own by BBC Worldwide on 3rd November 2003.
