Resident Evil Afterlife on Blu-ray – The DVDfever Review

Resident Evil Afterlife
Presented in the original 2.35:1 theatrical ratio and in 1080p high definition, the picture is sharp and detailed, representing the bold colours and scenery and action perfectly. For the record, I’m watching on a Panasonic 37″ Plasma screen via a Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray player.

The sound is in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, for which I got the 5.1 DTS version, and you can guess what to expect – explosions, gunfire, screaming. It’s loud! Play it late at night and you’ll wake up the neighbours. Dialogue is also clear with no problems.

The extras, which are also in high definition and contain subtitles in English and Spanish, are as follows:

  • Undead Vision: View the film with picture-in-picture interviews and behind the scenes footage over selected scenes. Basically, it’s rather like a visual audio commentary but with some extra content from time to time, with chat from key cast and crew members.

  • Deleted and Extended Scenes (6:48): There’s 8 scenes here, but with a total running time of just under 7 minutes, there’s nothing that screams “Put me back in the movie. I’m necessary!”. However, it is interesting to see some scenes with mere green-screen backdrops and no additional effects or sound. One, featuring Milla Jovovich, Wentworth Miller and Ali Larter supposedly on a boat on the L.A. river is particularly bizarre. Wentworth, particularly, looks like he wants to burst into laughter because of how it all appears… or maybe that’s how he always acts?

  • Outtakes (4:30): Four-and-a-half minutes of mostly goofs and gaffes during the filming of the movie.

  • Featurettes (47:33): Seven featurettes adorn this disc, totalling just under 48 minutes, following a similar style to the first supplemental feature, taking a look at Paul W.S. Anderson’s return to directing the franchise – after Alexander Witt and Russell Mulcahy took over for Nos. 2 and 3 respectively, the casting, the 3D filming technique, action sequences, set design; the evolving of the undead creatures and the movie’s gaming origins – most notably taking its cue from Resident Evil 5 with key characters such as the Axeman, Majini and the ‘flower’ dogs.

  • Sneak peak of Resident Evil: Damnation (1:10): A brief trailer for a forthcoming 3D fully-CGI movie.

  • Previews: Oddly, there’s no trailer for this movie itself, but you do get some for Takers, Salt, The Virginity Hit, Faster and Ticking Clock.

  • Audio commentary: with writer/director Paul WS Anderson and producers Jeremy Bolt & Robert Kulzer.

The menu mixes images from the film against a backdrop of a location that comes up late in the film, so I won’t give any spoilers here, and loops over and over. It’s very well done, but if you’ve got it on in the background while you’re doing something else, you’ll soon be muting it. There are subtitles come in English, French, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian and Swedish, all of which is commendable. However, the number of chapters is rather thin on the ground with 16 over the 97-minute running time. I go by the rule of thumb of one every five minutes, taking into account one each for the opening and closing credits.

Resident Evil Afterlife is out now on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD.
