These two separate radio shows recorded live in Paris in March and December last year confirm Eric Bibb’s status as the number one world-bluesman.
Recorded on the cusp of, and after Obama’s election, it catches Bibb full of enthusiasm and hope for the future, shared by the Parisian crowd at the intimate FIP Radio studios.
American Bibb, is caught on top form delivering, as he usually does, a brilliant live set of mostly originals.
It’s always a great night out watching and listening to this master songwriter delivering classics such as , an extended Needed Time, which lasts a whopping 8 mins plus to the great delight of his loyal fanbase.
He even manages to get them to sing and clap for almost three minutes of the song, concluded by ecstatic applause.
CD 1, December 2, he plays with his full band - Larry Crockett on drums and percussion, Dubliner Trevor Hutchinson on upright bass and Swedish guitarist Staffan Astner from Stockholm .
This a relatively short set of 14 songs, but it’s jammed packed with brilliant World Blues songs that even the purists cannot ignore.
It starts with R&B infused Kokomo, leading to a jazzy Still Livin’ On which still manages to keep the lightweight R&B shuffle intact.
Diamond Days is a philosophical song – the usual up and down days we all get, mostly nickels and dime, sometimes diamonds, whereas Pockets is about compartmentalising – in this case it’s love that’s his favourite pocket.
On Hold On we get hear Astner’s digital class as he showers the blues- heavy classic with some mesmerising solos.
Bibb has written some great ballads, none come better than For You from his album Friends, on which he duetted with Ruthie Foster. Here it does lack that magical moment (chemistry) caught on the original album.
CD 2 has a 20 minute video strip which has a snippet of Bibb duetting with headline act Richie Havens in a changing room. There are some short interviews with Bibb, and a complete clip of Needed Time.
In the concert itself, Bibb has drummer Crockett from the first session and extraordinary bluesman Amar Sundy on guitar who brings his Tuareg influences to the mix.
They romp through a grittier set with Destiny Blues turning out the best of an already excellent set, with Sundy showing why he’s hot property on the blues scene.
