Elly Roberts reviews
143 Records/Reprise
Breathy Canadian Jazz-cross over singer brings out a follow-up to his eponymously titled debut album.
It’s Time is a play it safe commercial covers album of well knowcompositions, that will no doubt get an airing in the cool wine bars acrossthe nation – and BBC Radio 2. Writers include the usual fodder, Gershwin, Eddy Arnold, Lennon and McCartney and Cole Porter.Production and arrangements are the only things that make this lightweighteffort work.
Its punchy enough in parts Feeling Good (with plenty of reverb onthe vocals), mild and inoffensive to even the most discerning ear: how thepurists will receive it is another matter. Engelbert Humperdincks smash hitQuando is brought to a loungy pace with support from Nelly Furtado, losing its way in the process.
Now and again he goes into Sinatra mode – Foggy Day In London being thebest and worst example. Then Beatles Money is a reckless rendition.
Harry Connick Jnr does this kind of thing better, despite a disastrousHarry For The HolidaysChristmas release, with Jamie Cullum taking to a higher level.
Bubles voice is far better in the studio. Last year I saw him live on thetelly and he was appaling, so better stick with the CD player.

Elly Roberts passed away in 2011, but he was a man who was so passionate about all types of music and loved meeting his musical heroes, such as Mick Hucknall at a book signing at the Trafford Centre, Manchester in 2007.
A former teacher and also a music journalist, DJ and radio presenter on local community station Calon FM, plus appearances on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio 2, Elly started doing reviews for DVDfever.co.uk in 2004 and he did the majority of the CD and concerts reviews on the website.
I know also that he loved getting away for the summer to Spain and I hope that wherever he is now he is enjoying the hot sunshine and, as one of his friends has said on his Facebook page, that he is interviewing his musical heroes.
