Mutiny centres around Cole Reed, who misses the action of being a cop (well, he can always watch Traffic Cops), and is now a security guard for Tanita Tikaram’s billionaire brother, but there’s a good tradition in Jason Statham (Shelter) movies where he’s looking to settle a score, as Tibu Campallo (Ramon Tikaram – Fackham Hall) is murdered in a shootout when they drive into an alleyway & the latter gets in the way of a bullet.
Jeez, should’ve been made out of Kevlar like the lead action hero.
Ducking out of the limelight, he sneaks on board a container ship with the pass of some random guy he killed – whom he barely looks like – and encounters people smuggler Captain Marko Madsen (Roland Møller – also the baddie in Skyscraper), along with his angry ex-military crew, all of which have itchy trigger fingers, but one of which just happens to have been replaced with the only other nice person onboard, potential love interest Angie Ellis (Annabelle Wallis – Mercy).
The main bad guy is the charisma-free Jaran Daniles (Simon Kluth), and I can barely remember anything he did, other than eventually have a fight with Statham, at one point.
Ms Wallis adds a bit of glamous as a Brit doing an American accent – something our lead never bothers with, but on a scale of zero to entertaining – and given that Jason churns out action films like there’s no tomorrow – this entry is slow, leaden, predictable, overlong at even 95 minutes, and I could pull a better script out of my arse. I should’ve known to expect nothing of value from the director of 2023’s awful Plane.
Yes, with Jason Statham on cruise control, Mutiny is no Speed 2!
Oh, and… FFS. This is yet another movie shot at the awkward 2.00:1 aspect ratio – which fits ZERO cinema screens, as it’s windowboxed all around – indicates it was originally made for TV, and then someone made a last minute change to put it on the big screen.
In fact, about the only good thing about this film is the supposedly-spoof poster someone made, above, which pays homage to 1988’s original poster for Die Hard.
NOTE: There are no mid- nor post-credit scenes, so once Statham growls his last and the credits roll, you can run off if you need the toilet.
Mutiny is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
