Dom Robinson reviews

Young and Dangerous 2

Distributed by

Young and Dangerous 2 stars Ekin Cheng as a Ho Nam, a branch leader within the Hung Hing Society and has just launched a new club with his girlfriend Smartie (Gigi Lai). Things take a nasty turn when Nam and his best friend Chicken (Jordan Chan) are framed for murdering their boss - something at which his moll, Yao (Chingmy Yau), is none too pleased about...

At least I think I've got that right. Given that it takes thirty minutes before you see the first fight and then that features one man with a small sword fighting off four each with a samurai sword(!), plus an appalling edit in chapter 15 after Nam and Chicken escape from the building where their boss was murdered, I had trouble keeping my eyes open and it was only the presence of the gorgeous Chingmy Yau (which even the box can't spell right) that stopped me nodding off. However, she looked a lot better in Return of the God of Gamblers.

The print is framed at a 1.85:1 widescreen ratio but is non-anamorphic and like Return of the God of Gamblers and The Blade, it's a real pain to find the subtitles burnt into the print and also placed partly in the black bar at the bottom of the screen, so zooming in to fill a widescreen TV results in them getting cut off so you either have to watch with the postage-stamp effect (black bars all round) or with a distorted image if you want it to touch the sides.

The sound quality is fine, but while it states it has a stereo soundtrack, it sounds no different from mono. There's a few dodgy tunes in the film that the back cover refers to as a "catchy rock score".

Extras :

Chapters and Trailers :

There are 19 chapters to the disc which is fine and the original theatrical trailers for both Young & Dangerous films are included.

Languages & Subtitles :

The film is in released in the original Cantonese language with English subtitles as part of the picture.

Original movie poster :

is what you get inside the case, the size falling somewhere between A4 and A5.

Menu :

It's static and silent and contains a shot of the front cover.

Overall, a dreadful film with any action sequences occuring very few and far between and not much to recommend it.

Again, as with Return of the God of Gamblers, when booting up this disc on my DVD-ROM, it never worked properly with no picture at first and lots of sound breaking up for what sounded like the company logo's music. I had to press STOP and then access the menus manually. I don't know what's caused this though.
