Sirens is an oddity, but a curious oddity.
In life, I can’t be doing with fake people, and here, there’s none so fake as socialite Michaela (Julianne Moore – Sharper), who owns a homing Peregrine falcon called Barnaby and lives in a huge, cliff-top mansion, with hedge fund manager husband Peter (Kevin Bacon, excellent in the recent The Bondsman), with Michaela – known to friends as Kell – holding lavish parties, because it makes her feel important for five minutes.
She also has a strange relationship with lickspittle assistant Simone (Milly Alcock – Superman), who caters to her every, daft whim, even to the point where Kell needs to get rid of the chewing gum in her mouth before she heads out to her waiting crowds, and the only recepticle is the young lady’s mouth… Ewww!!!
But the self-centred Simone has a thorn in her side, in slovenly sister Devon (Meghann Fahy – Drop), who turns up, unwelcome, and carrying a huge fruit basket that Simone had sent her… which is quite daft that she dragged it all the way there, and unnecessary, but, hey, plot device.
Devon needs help with with their aging father, Bruce (Bill Camp – Zero Day), but it’s like Simone is happy to live in what feels like a completely different world, and more like a cult. No wonder, she thinks her younger sister is being taken adventage of, and wants to extricate her from there!
However, whilst avoid spoilers, I’m not really sure where Sirens is going. At times, it seems to make some progress, while at others, it just seems to be treading water. It’s amusing to a degree, to see everyone go about their business, but I’m not sure it’ll keep everyone until the end of its five-episode run.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Sirens is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from today.
