Star Trek Beyond is due out in the summer, and this time round, the crew of the USS Enterprise – led by Captain James T Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), have been attacked by a powerful unstoppable wave of unknown aliens led by Idris Elba (Luther). They arrive at a new planet where they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy but also meet a beautiful female alien who helps them. Awww… shucks.
And now a second trailer has been released, which shows a lot more action and sets out the stall as to what the film’s about, but after the disappointing 2009 Star Trek reboot and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, I still don’t have huge hopes for this one.
Also returning are Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and, sadly, Simon Pegg. There’s also Sofia Boutella, while JJ Abrams steps down from directing duty going solely to producing, while the director is Justin Lin (Fast and Furious 3-6). Writing credits go to Doug Jung, Roberto Orci, John D Payne, Patrick McKay and, apparently… oh dear, Simon Pegg. His work only ever *works* when he collaborates with Edgar Wright (eg. Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End).
Star Trek Beyond is released in the UK on July 22nd 2016, the same date as the US, but a lot of European countries are getting it earlier so I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets brought forward.
