The Beast In Me centres around Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes – Brigsby Bear), a famous author who’s struggled to put a book out since 2018, which took a sleight about her estranged father.
Her son, Cooper, also died 4 years ago, and as we meet her, it’s the lad’s birthday and she’s turned up as his graveside, and had a ruckus with the man who killed him, Teddy Fenig, a drunk driver who escaped prosecution.
Meanwhile, the man who just moved in next door, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys – Hallow Road), is famous for the fact his wife went missing some years ago. He’s never been charged with her murder, but a lot of people think he did it. Still, he’s managed to woo another young lady, Nina (Brittany Snow – Bushwick).
Also, her first ‘introduction’ to him is his rabid dogs, which keep storming onto her grounds, followed by his security guard, so it’s not the greatest of starts.
Although Nile’s trying to get the neighbours onside by redeveloping part of the local park to include a jogging path, he also has a temper that’s shorter than a one-inch rope, so if he did do the deadly deed, he’s doing a bad job hiding it… or is this the writers throwing us a curveball?
Yes, The Beast In Me does get silly twisty-turny early on, though, and I hope it’s not eating itself too soon, but as for the two lead characters, they’re both a bit fucked up in their own ways, hence they get on like a house on fire!
It does have some drama tropes we’ve seen before, and I’m not sure if I’ll last the full 8 episodes, but it does feature The Pixies’ track, Wave of Mutilation, which I hadn’t heard before, and is ace.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
