My BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW of THE BONDSMAN on PRIME VIDEO!

The Bondsman

The Bondsman stars Kevin Bacon (MaXXXine) as Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter. And he’s dead. Well, soon… and setting the scene by opening with Norman Greenbaum’s original – and best – version of Spirit in the Sky.

Of course, this isn’t the first time he’s been dead in a production. 1990 saw Joel Schumacher’s incredible Flatliners, a film I loved the first time and it’s stayed with me ever after. In fact, after buying a Creative Dxr2 DVD drive for my PC back in 1998, the year DVDs were released in the US – with the UK having to wait another year for them – one of the very first I obtained was Flatliners!

But back to this, and Mr Bacon, who’s cool AF in most things, captures his first bad guy by throwing a wasp’s nest into an apartment in order to flush them out… leading to his predicament of no longer breathing.

Smoking should be bad for your health, but well… when you see dead Hub light one up, whilst having a hole in his neck, you can imagine how that’ll end up.

I’ll avoid spoilers and only go into the basics, but while finding multiple phones in his office drawer, ringing from Pot ‘O Gold, and with his face looking like he hasn’t entered the lottery any time recently, this is actually the company he’s going to have to work for, going forward.

For this job, he’s still a bounty hunter, but now works for the Devil. His task is to kill all demons and prevent Armageddon, but if he fails at any point, he’ll be killed off, permanently! That’s a piece of Contract Law which wouldn’t pass muster in this reality!

The Bondsman features plenty of gore as body parts get separated from where they should normally reside, and we find Hub’s mother, Kitty (Beth GrantLucky), also coming along for the ride, since a situation has led her to declare, “I’m going to need a new church!”

This comedy/gorefest is all played straight by this pair, and is brilliant entertainment. As an aside, it’s interesting to note that while Mr Bacon certainly doesn’t look his age, he’s actually 66. Playing his mother, Ms Grant is 75!

Compare that to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, when Sean Connery was just over 11 years older than Harrison Ford, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, where Lionel Jeffries was actually six months YOUNGER than Dick Van Dyke, despite playing his Dad!

Yes, your mind is now blown as much as these zombies need to be with a gunshot or three!

Thanks to our friends at Prime Video for the screener prior to release.

The Bondsman is on Prime Video from tomorrow.
