The Expendables 2 on Blu-ray – The DVDfever Review

Oddly, there’s no appearance from Mickey Rourke, even if his role in the first one was marginally bigger than Charisma’s. However, what I did really enjoy is that while at first I was concerned at this film’s rating being a 15-cert compared to the original’s 18, there is still plenty of violence to be found here. The way they get around it is that when it comes to the multiple times where a baddie’s head is shot off, it’s all done with CGI. Same with many of the hand-to-hand combat moves resulting in bloodshed. Stallone used some of this in 2008’s Rambo and it worked very well there.

Overall, as I’ve said, The Expendables 2 delivers where the first film didn’t, but it still has a way to go to fill in the gaps and make it a brilliant action film.

Hence, roll on The Expendables 3 – it’s a dead-cert, although I do wonder who they’ll bring into the mix who hasn’t been in there before.

Presented in the original 2.35:1 theatrical ratio and in 1080p high definition, the picture is sharp and detailed with no problems whatsoever, allowing you to see every last, gross sinewy twist in Stallone’s forehead, arms and everything else (shudder). Thankfully, Stallone’s no longer in charge of the camera, but Simon West still makes good use of the widescreen frame a lot of the time so it makes for pleasing viewing. For the record, I’m watching on a Panasonic 50″ Plasma screen via a Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray player.

As for the sound, this is in 11.1 DTS Neo:X, or DTS 5.1 for those, like me, without the full technical dohickey. Dialogue (except for Stallone’s mumblings) and ambience/score are fine, while gunfire and explosions are fantastic and constant when things kick off big time (which is most of the time).

The extras are as follows:

  • Gods of War: Assembling Earth’s Mightiest Anti-Heroes (21:19): Behind-the-scenes comments and chat, amongst the clips, from key cast and crew members. It’s a very standard extra.

  • On The Assault: The Real-life Weaponry of The Expendables 2 (13:36): Randy Couture takes the viewer to The Gun Store in Las Vegas, Nevada, to shoot all the weapons the use in the film. That would be cool fun if we really could try it, though.

  • Deleted Scenes (4:39): Four unnamed scenes, some of which are extended versions of scenes, but you only see the extra bit that was cut out, not the whole scene including that bit. There’s nothing worth putting back in though. The last two are brief action scenes, but feel more like staged ballet sequences.

  • Gag reel (5:09): Does what it says on the tin.

  • DTS Sound tests: One apiece for DTS 5.1, DTS 7.1 and, one I haven’t come across before, DTS Neo:X 11.1.

  • Audio commentary: with director Simon West.

So, there’s a bit less than was on the first film’s release, but I see they’ve also ditched the pointless features: BD Touch, Meta Menu and LG Live.

The menu mixes drawn images of the cast with a short piece of the theme.

There are subtitles in English only and the chaptering really isn’t enough with a mere 16 over the 103-minute running time.

The Expendables 2 is released tomorrow on Blu-ray and DVD.
