The Fabulous – The DVDfever Review – Netflix – Chae Soo-bin

The Fabulous The Fabulous is rather a screwball South Korean comedy/drama centred around Pyo Ji-eun (Chae Soo-bin), who works as head of PR at the luxury fashion brand agency, AUDREY.

We first see her waking up in rather a dishevelled state, before heading out to work at a fashion show, run by the stroppy Joseph (Lee Sang-woon), but which will be attended by Ahn Nam-hee (Choi Hee-jin), a big cheese in the fashion industry, and she’s come to watch Mr Stoppy’s show. However, fashion shows are usually full of clothes which no-one would normally wear in the high street, and there’s far better attire from Pyo, with her above-the-knee thigh-boots combo with her mini-skirt…

There’s not really a huge amount of deeply-thought structure into the narrative, since we have situations such as a waiter who has the hots for Pyo, model Ye Seon-ho has a boyfriend, Young-soo, who’s a nasty sort, and the models are all sniping at each other, even to each other’s faces.

Additionally, one woman says, of some fashion items: “I’m just not feeling all of these”. That’s how I feel about this drama. Perhaps that’s because it’s overly cheesy nonsense and a bad soap opera, but I know there will be a market for this, so I’m wrong and they’re right, even for a scene fully of boingy noises, such as when annoyed woman makes looney-tunes gestures round her head, reminding me of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em with Frank Spencer’s over-springy sofa, and that was almost 50 years ago. Nothing ever changes…

I also learned one thing: The waiter referred to Pyo as “Noona”, for which the internet confirms is – in the Korean context, “it’s a boy’s elder sister or term of endearment. However, unlike oppa, noona can’t be used to reference a girlfriend as it’s just a friendlier way of saying older sister or woman.”

So, I’m not really much more the wiser.

And despite being a former acquaintance of Pyo, Ji Woo-min has weird robot-like eyes, so I’m wondering if he’ll be revealed as an automaton as the series ends? Probably not.

However, I do question that people can drink straight out of bottles in a nightclub, since that certainly isn’t allowed!

Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.

The Fabulous is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from Friday December 23rd.
