The Moon is a space-based disaster movie where the race to return to the titular planet is still on, and a second South Korean team is about to take off, the first team’s rocket having exploded, killing the three astronauts onboard, five years earlier.
Now, in December 2029, that second team is heading up, although why only have 3 astronauts going up into space? Surely, you need more?! There’s tasks afoot, as the place contains underground resources such as Helium-3, which can aid their resources for tens of thousands of years. Plus, solar winds come along and block out all satellites around the world, as well as causing other problems.
Worse still, there’s a subsequent explosion, leaving astronaut Hwang Seon-woo (Do Kyung-soo) as alone as Major Tom, since colleagues Lt Cho and Commander Lee are now brown bread, and the one-man band has to put his faith in getting guidance from the previous flight director, Kim Jae-guk (Sol Kyung-gu – The Whirlwind), to sort things out.
But while waiting for assistance, which is due to come and dock with him in two days, can it all work out, when everything went tits up five years ago? Either way, Hwang will have wide-eyed panic written across his face, such as the time when he expriences a meteor shower. However, when such situations occr, it’s all very much “here’s a problem, overcome it; then here’s another, overcome it; and another… and so on”.
There are plot points you learn about some of the character later on, but it’s all rather soap-opera-style in terms of plotting, leading me to ultimately conclude: Gravity, this is not, but it passes a couple of hours.
The film is presented in the original 1.90:1 (digital IMAX) widescreen ratio, in 2160p high definition, and bring the dark side of the moon (I had to bring in that phrase) brilliantly into view, so we can see clearly see Hwang’s darkest moments.
There’s a handful of extras, all very much of the watch-once variety:
- Making Of (4:14): Brief soundbites from cast and crew, such as shooting on a soundstage for the moon, itself, as well as building the rocket out of parts that actually came from NASA.
- Character Bios (3:40): This is more like a further making-of extension, before getting to the point where they all blow smoke up each other’s behinds.
- Trailer (1:21): In the original 1.90:1 widescreen aspect ratio.
The Moon is out now on 4K Blu-ray Steelbook Blu-ray and DVD.
