The Rip is the term given by cops to busting a stash house, i.e. a place where drug money is… well, stashed.
As the film begins, Captain Jackie Velez (Lina Esco), has been killed, and her murder is suspected to have been carried out by a drugs cartel, since she was going after a lot of money in that field at that time.
Internal Affairs are trying to get to the bottom of whodunit, while Lt Dane Dumars (Matt Damon – The Instigators) wants to run the investigation into her murder off the books. However, as the day’s work for the team – including Det Sergeant JD Byrne (Ben Affleck – The Accountant 2) – comes to an end, Dane he gets a tip-off about a potential $300,000 being holed up in a house in Hialeah, in their State of Florida. Sounds like an easy one to round off the day with… but then if that was the case, they wouldn’t be making a film about it.
Well, they get a bit more than they bargained with, since at the house that used to belong to the grandmother of young Desi (Sasha Calle – The Flash), who’s waiting on probate to clear, before she and her sister can sell the place, the copsuncover more cash than you can shake a stick at – around $20m, in fact.
Hence, The Rip leaves you wondering if the cops are going to consider stealng the money – since as one says, they could live like Kings on of that – but then, who’s on the level, and who might be corrupt?
Well, before you can find that out, it is amusing when a the cops are extricating the cash from the loft, causing the house to get very dusty early on, and it’s obviously CGI because no-one in the lounge is reacting to it when it gets in their faces!
Albeit a mostly one-location thriller, The Rip is a gritty work in a similar vein to Den Of Thieves, with cops talking gruffly when they’re not shouting at each other. And while it may feel a bit low-key by comparison, it’s a superb watch.
NOTE: There are NO mid- nor post-credits scenes.
