The Tower Series 3 – The DVDfever Review – ITV drama – Gemma Whelan

The Tower Series 3 The Tower Series 3 – subtitled Gallowstree Lane, where the initial scene takes place – follows on from last year’s second series, but it’s 20 months later, plot-wise, and opening with a summary that includes the soap-opera lives of various characters – that aspect going over my head.

Late at night, a young, coloured lad, Spencer (Max Fincham), has been fatally stabbed. Was it a random attack or was he targeted on purpose? Meanwhile, his friend, Ryan (Lamar Waves), has gone AWOL and bigwigs upstairs aren’t helping the situation by being their usually plot-by-numbers-style obstructive selves, unless Gemma can convince them.

However, there are plot references back to series 2, as you might expect when this is a continuation of a series of novels, but I can’t say I’m as invested in these characters compared to, say, The Wire – probably the best cop TV series of all time.

Obviously, I’ll avoid spoilers here, but on a minor plot point, it’s safe to say that when I’m using my phone while out and about, if I see a group of any lads coming the other way, I’ll temporarily put it back in my jacket pocket. You can’t trust anyone, these days, especially after the GoPro video I made while walking around the new Stockport Interchange bus station, and when I got outside, I realised I’d been followed by two lads who were sat down in there as I walked through.

I heard the voice of one: “What’s that?”, to which I replied, “It’s a camera”. He continued, “Can I take a picture of myself?”, to which I retorted, “No, thanks” and since by then, I’d stopped by a bench and put the GoPro back in my bag, I kept hold of it all while – without looking back – I just walked at normal, but determined, speed towards the shops and a large group of people. I knew they wouldn’t follow.

It was the lamest attempt at trying to get me to voluntarily part with it, though. After all, what would I want with a picture on there of some scrawny kid?! And as soon as he would’ve taken hold of it, he would be off like The Flash. I wouldn’t be able to catch up with him. Bunch of shitbags.

You can see the GoPro video below, and the potential culprits show up at 1:21.

However, back to The Tower Series 3, and amongst all the clandestine conversations off-the-record, and bringing undercover cops to the plot – plus the fact that Emmett J Scanlan always comes across as a dodgy get in any TV drama, so far, this does feel very much ‘seen it all before’, but I’ll stick with it to see how it turns out. That said, that was my decision last time, and it was complete nonsense towards the end.

It’s all online at the time of posting this, but I’ll most likely watch episodes 2-4 while they’re broadcast.
