Treason is a new Netflix five-part drama where deputy head of MI6, Adam Laurence (Charlie Cox – King Of Thieves), is giving a talk to his son Callum’s school about working for the service, when he gets an interruption…
During this presentation, the head-honcho, Sir Michael Angelis (Ciarán Hinds – Zack Snyder’s Justice League), is quaffing drinks in his club when he’s about to be poisoned by hitwoman Kara (Olga Kurylenko – Momentum, which is still a daft film I highly recommended), after he tries to blackmail a dodgy lawyer who arranged a Visa for his 26-year-old lover… and I can tell he’s dodgy, because he played a dodgy lawyer in Doctors, too.
I like the way that Adam gets the news, while he’s at the school presentation, with someone whispering in his ear, exactly the same as when George W Bush was given the news about 9/11 on the morning of that day. He was told “The country is under attack“, and Adam asks a colleague if the nation is under attack.
Anyhoo, with Angelis out of action, this makes Adam top dog, but is it a step-up on his career, or is the job a poisoned* chalice? (*pun not intended).
Treason brings us secrets, potential bombs, kidnapping, more blackmail, double-crossing, no-one being able to trust anyone, and that’s just in the first couple of episodes!
If that all sounds like nonsense, then it certainly plays out that way. However, it’s entertaining nonsense, rather reminding me of 2020’s The Stranger, which got very silly at times.
Plus, although the trailer does go into more details about things than I will, here, it’s safe to say that Adam and Kara aren’t exactly strangers, and having watched two episodes so far, it becomes a bit cat-and-mouse between the pair, with the stakes rising higher.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Treason is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from Monday December 26th.
