USS Callister: Into Infinity is the sixth and final episode of Black Mirror Season 7.
This finale 7 opens with a summary of the original show, because it’s been six-and-a-half years since Season 4’s USS Callister.
This time round, Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons – Zero Day) is now dead, and a memorial is being planned. (Don’t worry, this is noted very early on)
While Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti – The Penguin) still works at Callister Inc., inside the VR-style Space Fleet game – with all those inside the USS Callister being clones – a version of Nanette ‘kills’ player Mohawk (Gwion Glyn) in the game – ejecting him back into reality, but doesn’t have any tags on her that shows she’s a player – and such individuals aren’t paying for a subscription, hence he doesn’t know who to report for cheating.
This goes against the game’s terms and conditions, and it’ll also be frowned upon that she’s ‘teleporting’ into the game in order to steal credits so they can continue to fund ways to power and repair their spaceship, albeit it’s a dangerous way to do so.
As you’d expect, there’s a lot that I cannot say about the episode’s content, but I didn’t go a whole heap for the original episode, and at almost 90 minutes, USS Callister: Into Infinity is definitely overlong, and not great. Certainly, this is one story that didn’t really need to be given a sequel.
They clearly spent a fair bit of money on it, but something like the low-key Eulogy worked FAR better for me!
Then again, who can say no to Cristin Milioti, especially in that outfit with the combat boots? 😉
