I, Tonya leads the new cinema releases and trailers February 23rd 2018

I, Tonya This week, there are THREE new films out for you to choose from: Margot Robbie and Alison Janney go head-to-head as the mother and daughter combo from hell in the true-life story, I, Tonya, Ruth Wilson returns to the fold after 15 years in Dark River, and there’s a group of old people getting together to find meaning to life in Finding Your Feet.

The trailer for this is full of plaudits whilst it attempts to look like an award-winning British movie, but for me, it’s not really hitting the mark for my interest. It’s possible I could be wrong, though.

Writer/Director: Clio Barnard
Also stars: Mark Stanley, Sean Bean

I, Tonya centres around competitive ice skater Tonya Harding, played by Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad), who rises among the ranks at the US Figure Skating Championships, but her future in the sport is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes.

With Ms Robbie in the lead role, I’m not an afficianaro of Ms Harding, to decide whether or not she’s a good likeness, but after seeing the teaser and now watching this Red Band Trailer, I’m really looking forward to it!

I, Tonya is released in the UK on February 16th, 2018, so presumably is trying for Oscars and BAFTAs.

Dark River

Following the death of her father, Alice (Ruth Wilson) returns to her home village for the first time in 15 years, to claim the tenancy to the family farm she believes is rightfully hers.

Finding Your Feet

When ‘Lady’ Sandra Abbott (Imelda Staunton) discovers that her husband of forty years is having an affair with her best friend she seeks refuge in London with her estranged, older sister Bif (Celia Imrie). The two could not be more different – Sandra is a fish out of water next to her outspoken, serial dating, free-spirited sibling. But different is just what Sandra needs at the moment, and she reluctantly lets Bif drag her along to a community dance class, where gradually she starts finding her feet and romance as she meets her sister’s friends, Charlie (Timothy Spall), Jackie (Joanna Lumley) and Ted (David Hayman).

To me, this just has the most predictable of premises and plots, and I can tell exactly what will happen during every last moment, but then I feel this movie is made more for my mother’s generation than my own.

Director: Richard Loncraine
Writers: Meg Leonard, Nick Moorcroft
Also stars: John Sessions, Josie Lawrence, Indra Ové
