Another World is a gorgeous Cantonese anime movie, which rather reminds me of the videogame Gris, albeit with a similarly baffling plot that takes some time to get your head around.
In this one, life’s knots are unresolved sentiments, which lead to the seeds of hate and evil, but which can also spur you on. Meanwhile, Yuri (Christy Choi Hiu Tung) is in the titular afterlife, because she’s dead, and looking for her brother, Kenji. This will only be possible with spirit-walker Gudo (Suet-Ying Chung – The Lyricist Wannabe), a young character who spends most of the time acting a bit puddled.
Elsewhere in the plot, in reality, the King died in battle and since he’s the father of another young woman, Goran, and since she’s heard unbelievable stories about how he met his maker, she’s visited by Gudo, who offers to take her beyond to find out the truth at the moment it happened.
Add in an evil character called Dark Sky, and Another World is all about love and loss, but given how the plot tied me in the knots that the film was going on about, I do need to see it again. Sadly, this only had a handful of showings and my schedule meant I was seeing it on its last day.
It’s a great shame my Odeon didn’t get the Q&A with director Tommy Kai Chung Ng and writer-producer Polly Yeung. That would’ve been great. I see it was also listed as a separate screening with “Live intro + meet & greet”, although I don’t know how a full audience would get to ‘meet and greet’ with the filmmakers when only an additional 30 minutes was allocated. Maybe it’ll come back another time.
Another World is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
