Black As Night – The DVDfever Review – Amazon Prime Video – Keith David

Black As Night

Black As Night means it’s time for zombies again, and they’re partial to eating hobos…

Leading the charge is Shawna (Asjha Cooper), who fancies Chris (Craig Tate). Safe to say, before long, she’s bitten by one of the ‘homeless vampires’ – the very mention of those words together making me laugh – and then tries to find out info about living as a vampire, and any rules on killing one.

She wants to find out who’s behind this vampire uprising, and enlists both Chris and best friend Pedro (Fabrizio Guido) to help her, setting herself up like a wannabe Buffy the Vampire Slayer, even name-checking the character.

However, it takes until 52 minutes in before Keith David (as lead vampire Babineaux) shows up, and the vampire ‘action’ is no ‘Buffy’ – just occasional, rather than constant, and even when it does happen, every death is pretty much the same. Had there been loads of it, this could’ve been so much better. Since it doesn’t, it has some moments, but does rather ramble on, albeit with some light comedy thrown in.

Black As Night is also set in New Orleans, but other than occasional passing references to Hurricane Katrina, this could’ve been set anywhere.

One annoying thing, though: the film doesn’t have a full list of cast credits, just “Also starring…” even though they haven’t listed the main cast and their character names. Why would someone do this? I had to go a-hunting on the internet to fill in the gaps!

Thanks to our friends at Amazon Prime Video for the screener prior to release.

Black As Night is on Amazon Prime Video from Friday October 1st. but the film isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
