Blink Twice opens by presenting a situation which a number of high-profile celebrities have wound up in, as Slater King (Channing Tatum – Deadpool And Wolverine) is having to step down from the CEO of his own company, due to certain elements of his behaviour, subsequently having made another board member into that role.
However, he still likes to impress, such as the MET Gala Night being attended by Frida (Naomi Ackie – Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody), her friend Jess (Alia Shawkat – Green Room), and many of Slater’s famous, wealthy friends, made up of a fair few well-known actors and actresses, including Christian Slater, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan and The Sixth Sense‘s Haley Joel Osment.
As such – and having bumped into him, Slater invites the pair for a long holiday on his private island, but as soon as they arrive, there’s red flags aplenty and weird things happening all over the place, including various members of house staff behaving very oddly indeed, making me think this was going to turn into Get Out… or maybe I should’ve ditched this film and got out… but then I still had Pulp Fiction to watch out of the four films that day, so there’s no point sitting in the lobby when I could be checking whether the film actually improves.
Alas, then Blink Twice turns into a poor attempt at a M. Night Shyamalan-type movie, as people start disappearing, while only protagonist Frida sees what’s going on, with the rest being completely devoid of clue.
The terrible script has most of the cast arsing about for far too long before the plot starts to play its hand, and while I’ll give no spoilers, it’s safe to say I found it a very grim situation to write about, and I can’t think why anyone bothered making such a film.
I really can’t see what Zoë Kravitz (co-writer, and also her directorial debut) was trying to see. Additionally, she also gives not only herself a cameo, but also one for her Dad, Lenny Kravitz, in an uncredited role. If you make any more, Ms K, please ensure they’re not a complete waste of my 102 minutes. Thanks.
Blink Twice is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on DVD, ahead of its release date TBA.
