Companion centres around the burgeoning new relationship between young lovers, Iris (Sophie Thatcher – Heretic) and Josh (Jack Quaid – Solos), with her recalling how she met him across the oranges in a supermarket.
That’s her first memory of him. Her last… comes up in the trailer and at the start of the film, but I’m going to leave that out of this. Yes, within a few weeks between watching the trailer and then the film, I have a bobbins memory and can’t remember diddly squat, so I’d forgotten that!
It’s time for a trip away, and they’re off to stay in a huge house owned by creepy, rich, Russian mobster, Sergey (Rupert Friend with a crazy mullet, Asteroid City), his other half, Kat (Megan Suri – It Lives Inside), and gay couple Patrick (Lukas Gage – Smile 2) and Eli (Harvey GuillĂ©n – The Garfield Movie 3D).
Where Josh stands out, though, is that because he’s a loser who can’t get a girlfriend, he has to resort to renting a Companion robot – also referred to as an Emotional Support Robot, although she comes complete with a wardrobe that shows how her dress sense is wearing checked trousers that look like Grandma’s curtains.
However, a particular situation leads to one of them being dead, she’s now covered in blood and holding a pocket knife. How did that happen when she’s programmed not to harm anyone? She also can’t lie, and isn’t aware she’s not human.
Companion is an engaging thriller which drip-feeds what we need to know about Iris at the precise point, and turns into a chase movie when she goes on the run and there’s $12m at stake, but if you want to see how it’ll all fit together and may or may not get resolved, you’re going to have to see it for yourself.
It also has a great soundtrack including with just the right songs at the right moments – all of which will make sense when you see the film – You Showed Me (The Turtles), This Guy’s In Love With You (Herb Alpert) and Emotion (Samantha Sang and The Bee Gees).
As an aside, it’s interesting when Josh refuses to join Iris in the shower when she suggests it. I had an ex like that: It’s a sign to get rid!
Sophie is the only Thatcher I want to see on my cinema screen – and is clearly a rising star, following Heretic, and there’s great chemistry alongside Jack Quaid, who’s also in another forthcoming, madcap thriller, Novocaine, currently due for release on March 28th.
There is a mid-credits scene, covered in the video below.
Companion is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
