Crossfire opens with the sound of gunshots sounding outside on the plaza while Jo (Keeley Hawes) is in her bedroom, sounding like the start of American Assassin – but showing nothing due to the limited budget.
Then fast-backwards to an earlier point in the holiday as the pool is busy-busy, but before long, the terrorists arrive. Ah, and they do spend some budget after all!
Of course, I’m sure if someone spilled the beans about which room was Piers Morgan’s, the baddies would leave them in peace.
As you’d expect, not everyone will survive in a situation clearly stemming back to the events in Turkey in 2015/2016, here, some people holing up in the kitchen area, with others hiding out where they can. Then we see the story as it flips back and forth between the then and now.
Meanwhile, Jo is a trained police officer, so she’s the Dylan O’Brien of the piece. However, seeing her toting a shotgun like John Wayne just seemed ridiculous, but then most of this did, and it’s an hour I won’t get back.
Crossfire is mostly people walking about with a scared look on their faces. Will they survive? Will they die? Well, it feels like anyone creeping about, whilst looking furtively, are bound to be completely safe.
As an aside, Daniel Ryan’s character, Ben, is referred to his nephew as ‘Uncle Ben’, but no, he’s not about to start making rice products. It would be more interesting if he did.
None of this series was available for preview, as it turned out. Having watched episode 1, I can see why.
I did watch episodes 2 and 3 when broadcast, but quite frankly, I still wasn’t impressed. Go watch American Assassin, instead.
Crossfire continues tomorrow on BBC1 at 9pm. It’s available to pre-order on DVD, ahead of its release on September 26th.
The whole series is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
