Deadloch – The DVDfever Review – Amazon Prime Video – Kate Box

Deadloch

Deadloch is a new drama set in Australia, and opens with two friends chancing across a dead male body in the buff, accidentally setting part of him on fire… Oops! But still, one of his tattoos is for the logo of the Deadloch Football Club, thus helping tie down who the victim is, although due to his other tattoos, he’s soon deduced to be footballer Trent Latham.

Cop Dulcie (Kate Box) is tasked with investigating the fresh cadaver, and she’ll be in charge until a more senior cop, the uncouth Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami), arrives. Plus, Trent has an angry brother Gavin (Jackson Tozer), who retorts to the cops, “I loved that cunt like a brother!”, to which Dulcie responds, “He *was* your brother(!)”

In fact, Dulcie seems to be the best cop in her force, because the rest of them make the Keystone Cops look professional(!)

So far after one episode, Deadloch is a bit of a mixed bag. There are a fair few laughs, albeit not laugh out loud. For example, there’s a choir scene from our two leads, where they’re singing The Divinyls’ I Touch Myself, with all the vigour of a church choir. Plus, when Eddie gets the idea that whoever did the deed is a ‘psycho killer’, she breaks into Talking Heads, just like I would. And, naturally, Dulcie and Eddie get on like a house that’s not on fire.

I will check out a second episode, but within the strong antipodean accents, it’ll be easier to watch when the episodes are streaming as normal, and subtitles are included.

Thanks to our friends at Prime Video for the screener prior to release.
