The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart – The DVDfever Review – Amazon Prime Video – Sigourney Weaver

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart centres around the titular young girl (Alyla Browne), whose parents are expecting a baby, although while she has a loving mother, Agnes (Tilda Cobham-Hervey), it doesn’t take long before we realise that her father, Clem (Charlie Vickers), is the nastiest piece of work imaginable.

There’s a teaser out there from Prime Video which confirms one aspect which I will mention here, in that Alice becomes orphaned, although I won’t say how that comes about. It’s worth mentioning, though, because she goes to live with her grandmother, June (Sigourney WeaverAvatar: The Way Of Water). Yes, how come Ms Weaver is now a grandma? It’s surely been just five minutes since 1979’s Alien?

But given that June has been very distant from everyone in the family for quite some time, is she the most suitable person for her to live with? Well, surely it’s a plus that a young woman with blue hair, Candy (Frankie Adams), was also taken in by June, so Alice has someone else to talk to?

Either way, we have a superb performance from Ms Browne as she tries to deal with the fresh shock of the death of her mother, and which brought me back to losing my own, two years ago.

I’ve only seen the first two episodes so far, but I’m certainly intrigued, and there’s also some great music thrown in, such as Roxy Music’s Let’s Stick Together, and a soft cover version of Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters by Phoebe Bridgers.

I’ve also not watched the whole trailer, because I can see it starts going into scenes from later episodes which I haven’t yet seen, and I don’t want anything to be spoiled. But while the opener is quite slow, it feels comfortably slow and doesn’t feel like it needs to rush through the story at all. With the second episode, though, that does build events nicely – adding in flashbacks and visions for Alice, and I hope the rest is as wholly engaging and powerful as these are, and with all the cast on top form.
