Edge of Tomorrow & A Million Ways To Die In The West lead the new cinema releases & trailers – w/e May 30th 2014

edge-of-tomorrow

This weekend there are five new films out for you to choose from: The Earth is under attack in Edge of Tomorrow, Seth McFarlane has a new comedy for the big screen in A Million Ways To Die In The West, the Sleeping Beauty legend is revisited in Maleficent, Roman Polanski has another new weird film out in Venus In Fur, and Greg Kinnear stars in the drama Heaven Is For Real.

Edge of Tomorrow

This film stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt amongst many soldiers who dress up in mech-warrior-type machinery to blast away the enemy. However, they frequently die, but soon after, they’ll be living again as the whole cycle goes on ‘Live, Die Repeat’, but why?

Emily Blunt looks stunning as always, but does Tom Cruise suit this? I still haven’t seen Oblivion, but it looks like the leftovers of that mixed with Groundhog Day. However, it does have a plus with Doug Liman (Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr & Mrs Smith) at the helm. The film co-stars Bill Paxton, Lara Pulver, Jeremy Piven, Charlotte Riley and Jonas Armstrong.

Bear in mind, that, as confirmed by Real Or Fake 3D, this is one of those films which has been shot in 2D and converted into 3D later, so save your pennies and see it in 2D.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

This new comedy Seth McFarlane, creator of Family Guy and Ted and, in the film, he plays a cowardly farmer who begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, and he must put his newfound courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun slinger, played by Liam Neeson, announces his arrival.

It also stars Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Silverman, Giovanni Ribisi, Wes Studi and is also directed by McFarlane.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Venus In Fur

Venus In Fur shows that if you want a film that looks plain weird then Roman Polanski‘s your man, and this one features Emmanuelle Seigner as an actress who attempts to convince director Mathieu Amalric how she’s perfect for a role in his upcoming production.

Seigner also starred in Polanski’s Frantic (1998) and Bitter Moon (1992).

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Maleficent

Maleficent tells the tale of Sleeping Beauty, told from the perspective of the titular villain, played by Angelina Jolie, looking at the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse young Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning).

It also stars Juno Temple, Sharlto Copley, Brenton Thwaites, Peter Capaldi, Miranda Richardson, Imelda Staunton, Sam Riley and Lesley Manville and if you have kids and/or are well into the Sleeping Beauty legend, then mayve it’ll be your bag, but for me it’s not.

Heaven Is For Real

This film is based on the New York Times best-selling nobel on the same name and puts Greg Kinnear in the role of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world. It also co-stars Kelly Reilly as his wife Sonja, and newcomer Connor Corum as their son Colton, who claims to have visited Heaven during a near death experience. Colton recounts the details of his amazing journey with childlike innocence and speaks matter-of-factly about things that happened before his birth … things he couldn’t possibly know. Todd and his family are then challenged to examine the meaning from this remarkable event.

Unfortunately, it looks utterly tedious.
