By the smug look on the CD cover, you’d swear that Tori Amos was the bees-knees.

Seems to me she’s been trying hard to fill the void left by KateBush’s ten year hiatus, and failed miserably. Flame-haired Amos brings out amarathon listening exercise, with very little sting in its tail. If you likewillowy songs that you will probably forget in a couple of minutes, then thisis your nest.

She flutters along, sometimes aimlessly trying to hit hertarget. It’s a huge swarm of averageness that only occasionally makes youfeel endeared to her often dreary pace. Few classy hooks appear, with theexception of Sleeps With Butterflies. Even the introduction of songwritinggenius Damien Rice on The Power Of Orange Knickers it fails toimpress.

Melodic throughout,it still doesn’t hit the right spots. It’s a veryself-indulgent and overly long collection which desperately needscropping. Serious low points include Witness, the depressing title track TheBeekeeper and final song Toast.

By track six I’d virtually switched off. Some respite pops up with the quirkyHoochie Woman, with Marys Of The Sea being the standout track.

It’s back to the drawing board I’m afraid. Bring on Kate Bush’s new album out this year.

File under: dull and uninspiring.
