Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 comes just over two years after the first FNAF movie, with both spawning from the videogame series, which I’ve had a go at briefly, but I can’t say I’m a massive fan of them.
As before, it’s also a 15-certificate, and has led to many parents stupidly kicking off at cinema staff because they can’t take in little Johnny and Mary, while they’re still knee-high to a grasshopper – all simply because they can play the game at home, but when the opening scene leads to the death of a young child, is it really something kids should be playing in videogame form?
That opener also leads to the introduction of the Marionette puppet, which doesn’t do a huge amount when all’s told.
While Mike (Josh Hutcherson – The Beekeeper) goes on a date with Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), for Abby (Piper Rubio), her robot class teacher, Mr. Berg (Wayne Knight – having lost a surprising amount of weight… Has he been on one of those tablets?), announces there’s a Science Fair on Saturday. Abby wants to take in her new robot, made with a little help from her ‘friends’, but he’s a nasty wanker who needs a telling, ‘accidentally’ smashes it, and her only resort is to actually bring her robot buddies down to kick off.
That’s after she previously popped down the closed-up Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, and found a FazTalker, resulting in her talking to her ‘friends’, with Chica beckoning her to “come find me“. Hmm… I’m sure Jimmy Savile tried the same thing.
Also popping along to that location are the Spectral Scoopers – basically, Most Haunted – led by Lisa (Mckenna Grace – Regretting You), but so much of the time, nothing happens… and even when things do start to kick off, it’s all so brief. An example is the odd occasion when the Marionette strikes and possesses someone… but it often takes a quick MacGuffin, and everything’s fine again.
Plus, despite reuniting Scream‘s Matthew Lillard (The Life of Chuck) and Skeet Ulrich in the cast list, it’s Universal Soldier: Regeneration all over again, which also brought back its two main characters… but didn’t bother putting them in the same scene! Lillard is only in a brief flashback scene, while I’ll leave you to discover where Ulrich pops up.
But… like the first film, this one is ALSO shot in a stupid 2.00:1 aspect ratio. As such, it’ll get sent out by the studio as a 2.00:1 film within a standard 1.85:1 container, so in most cases with cinemas, the film will be shown on a 2.39:1 screen, and end up looking windowboxed, with black bars at the side, as well as some smaller ones top and bottom. With the increasing number of films made this way, it’s ridiculous. What the fuck are Universal and director Emma Tammi thinking?!
I ended up seeing this on Odeon’s Dolby screen, given the timings, and I’d been led to believe they actually went to the trouble of setting up a specific 2.00:1 setting for films like this. After all, the Dolby screen isn’t an exact 2.39:1-shaped screen, but is a weird approx 2.20:1 ratio.
But no… despite going to town with comfy recliners, huge, booming sound, they drop the ball and leave the picture floating in the middle of the screen. When are they going to get this sorted out? I also occasionally go to Cineworld, and the same happens there on such a screen, so it’s not just Odeon. However, most Cineworld screens at Didsbury are 1.85:1, so I have a better chance of seeing those films properly. One weekend, there was only one film worth checking out – A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – so a £3 ticket there was in order.
Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on DVD.
