God Only Knows is a classic Beach Boys song from 1966, and the BBC have gone the ‘Perfect Day’ route of gathering a load of stars together to each sing a line.
Brian Wilson sings a couple of lines, including the last one, while the rest of the line-up includes Pharrell Williams, Emeli SandéSir Elton John, One Direction, Stevie Wonder, Jake Bugg, Lorde, Chris Martin, Kylie Minogue, Paloma Faith, Sam Smith, Florence Welch, Chrissie Hynde, Brian May, Dave Grohl, Alison Balsom, Martin James Bartlett, Danielle de Niese, Nicola Benedetti, Eliza Carthy, Baaba Maal, Jamie Cullum, Jaz Dhami, the Tees Valley Youth Choir and the BBC Concert Orchestra, plus non-singing appearances from BBC’s Zane Lowe, Lauren Laverne, Katie Derham, Gareth Malone and Jools Holland.
This is partly to plug the BBC and their “BBC Music” brand, whilst also masquerading under the guise of this year’s Children In Need song. BBC Music is described by the BBC as “an ambitious wave of new programmes, innovative partnerships and ground-breaking music initiatives that amount to the BBC’s strongest commitment to music in 30 years”.
So, it sounds like they’ve disappeared up their own backside.
And how much did it cost in this age of cutbacks and austerity??
