Gunman Taco Truck is a superb retro-styled and very colourful game which is great fun to play, part of which involves tearing bullets into roadkill, plus rednecks roaming the freeway. With each Operation Wolf-style attempt, I was improving my aim and my end-of-level scores.
But that’s not all it’s about. Inbetween these sections, you must use the roadkill make tacos and try to keep the customers satisfied, so it’s a bit like Mads Mikkelsen’s The Green Butchers. It’s easy to follow the recipes, although I never got the more complex foods assembled in time to get a tip, so those only came when someone wanted a cheese taco, as that’s the easiest to make.
Making a taco simply requires picking the right ingredients to go into each one, then wrap it up and hand it to the customer’s plate. One of the difficult aspects was to NOT run out of ingredients, since if you can’t make the meals requested, the customers will demand their cash back and you won’t make enough money to be able to buy the fuel to leave and move onto the next city, the final destination being Winnipeg.

The game did crash after a road trip at one point, forcing me to quit out of the game, but on going back into it, I was still able to continue the game. I ran out of fuel, but an emergency fuel truck came along just in time before I as completely slaughtered by rednecks. However, it did take a battering, and there wasn’t much life in the van by that point, so time to try again 🙂
In addition, this game was designed by Donovan Brathwaite-Romero when he was just nine years old. His idea was so good that his parents, John Romero and Brenda Romero, made its development a family project and this is the end result of two years production, with Donovan going on to continue learning coding and I look forward to his next game. And yes, you read right – John Romero as in the man behind Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake – three essentials in my early years of PC gaming.
Gunman Taco Truck is fantastic fun that’s well worth £8.99 of anyone’s money. It also features groovy Mexican-style music throughout the game, collectibles including decals for your truck, and after the new President, Trump, insisted on building a wall around Mexico, I’d like to use the gun on my taco truck to blast the wall away and turn Trump into roadkill! However, a Trump Taco might give me indigestion 😉
And what would Trump taste like anyway? I’m guessing like peach… because it can’t be long before he ‘impeaches’ himself! 😀
Gunman Taco Truck is out now on PC/Steam, Android Google Play and Apple iOS, and click on the top image for the full-size version.
