Last Breath is based on a 2019 true-life documentary of the same name, of which I was not aware until now, centred around saturation divers, who can work up to 1,000ft below the surface of the ocean, amongst 20,000 miles of pipeline under the sea.
Initially set in Aberdeen, from where they set off into the deep blue sea (even though it looks like the main filming was done in Malta!), of the three teams heading down, the main one centres around Duncan Allock (Woody Harrelson as Woody Harrelson), Dave Yuasa (Simu Liu (Barbie), just coming across as a right misery guts for no apparent reason) and Chris Lemons (Finn Cole – Fast And Furious 9), the latter of whom is going to come into a bit of trub.
Duncan is on his final trip down, as the company are retiring him far earlier than he’d like, and each team floats in a tin can until they can be brought to the right pressure as they descend, but before too long, the ship’s power dies, causing it to start drifting.
Chris’ “umbilical cord” (attaching him to the oxygen supply) is trapped, and it snaps, meaning he has just a few minutes of oxygen left (5 minutes in the documentary, but 8 minutes, here). The ship could drop anchor to stop their movement, but that could damage to the gas lines down below, causing an environmental disaster.
Cue a ton of clunky dialogue, such as the Dynamic Positioning Operator – aka DPO (Josef Altin – Out There), stating he needs to do a hard reset of the ship, but that it could cause various other issues if he does. Meanwhile, the Captain, Andre Jenson (Cliff Curtis, who I last saw also having problems underwater in Meg 2: The Trench), just tells him to “find a workaround“, as if it’s that straight-forward. Erm… surely, safety first?
Additionally, another big problem no amount of manoeuvering will solve is that while Last Breath largely has a good cast, it plods along like a Chanel 5 afternoon TV movie, and with the same level of acting from all concerned.
As an aside, as clips show at its conclusion, the real Chris Lemons is bald, while his wife, Morag, is blonde. In the film, he has a mostly full head of hair, and she’s a brunette! Er….
Additionally, during Last Breath, while it was mostly quiet, towards the end as a poignant moment came up, a couple in their 20s near the back started giggling. No idea why, as it wasn’t a comedy.
It was only after I shushed them that someone else did a bit later, too, but it wasn’t an easy one as I was in row C, and there was a guy in the row behind me between me and them (who were in around row H), and I didn’t want to shush THROUGH him.
I saw them as they left, instantly realised they were just wankers, then while stood in the dome area afterwards in the Trafford Centre, as I was waiting for Sister Midnight to start, although they didn’t see me in the room, they came past where I stood, and the chav female half of the couple shouted across the dome “KYLAAAA!!!” apparently to someone called Kyla on the other side somewhere. I responded, “JESUS!!!” and they thought it was funny. Runts!
NOTE: There are no mid- or post-credit scenes.
Last Breath is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
