Lazer Team is the first film to be funded by Google with their Youtube Red service, following in the footsteps of the likes of Netflix and their Idris Elba-starrer, Beasts Of No Nation.
After billions of years of thinking we are alone in the universe, we decode a message (in the ’60s) telling us that we are not alone, that the universe is a dangerous place and that we are going to be attacked.
Luckily, the message came from a friendly alien race that have fathered and protected us over the years. And now they are giving us the tools to fight back (in the form of ‘power armour’). But the delivery service takes a long time, and while waiting, they choose a champion of earth to train to wear the suit and defend the planet. Also, when the ship finally arrives, it gets shot down by four boneheads who play with the suit and ultimately get one piece each stuck to them. Working in tandem with the government, will they save the day? What do you think!
Lazer Team stars no-one famous – Irina Voronina, Alan Ritchson, Alexandria DeBerry, Colton Dunn and the ridiculously-named Burnie Burns, but it looks worth a watch, and at 90 minutes it shouldn’t outstay its welcome.
The film is released in the UK (and everywhere – it’s the internet, duh!) on January 27th 2016.
