There’s also a couple of those moments where one thing gets said at one point, with a ‘reply’ later on linking the two together, a suggestion that there’s another Time Lord out there, and a glimpse of John Hurt, who we saw in The Day of The Doctor as The War Doctor.
So, overall, I was kinda disappointed with this. The “Listen” premise made it sound like we could have another “Blink” on our hands, but then it went off in another direction. That’s fair enough, but give us some meat to get stuck into, Moffat, don’t tease us with possibilities – like the airlock – and then forget to give us a resolution, and then have the episode jump around so much, so as to hide the average scriptwriting. Back To The Future II did all that so much better.
Listen was only going to get a 6 from me, as a result of this, but the hint of the return of John Hurt bumped it up to a 7. He’s another great actor I would love a whole series from as The Doctor, but Hurt is an incredibly busy actor and would probably not have the time to commit to this (cue the obvious joke about the fact he’s got all the time in the world when he has a TARDIS at his disposal), but if he can still pop up occasionally in this particular guise then that’s a fair compromise, especially since I don’t want Capaldi to move on any time soon.
Next time: Keeley Hawes is in charge of a bank full of grotesque enemies, which The Doctor and Clara must rob or they will die.
