Make Me Prime Minister is a new Channel 4 evening gameshow where contestants want to become… yep, you guessed.
Over 6 weeks, 12 contestants will compete to become the PM. Sure, they can’t get it any worse than pretty much anyone since I was born, fifty years ago, but I figured it might be interesting to see how it pans out.
One of the chosen 12 is Jackie Weaver, who became famous at the Handforth Parish Council meeting in December 2020, countering that she didn’t have the authority, when it eventually turned out…. she did not have the authority, in the end.
The winner will score £25,000, and naturally I won’t reveal who scoops the cash because… I don’t know. I have only seen the first episode, after all.
Putting them through their paces are Tony Blair’s shouter-in-chief Alastair Campbell, along with Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. I don’t put any faith in any Lord, Baroness, whoever… since no-one person is better than the other in this world.
Posh student Alice Grant simps for Maggie Thatcher… oh dear. Another is Caroline who joined Extinction Rebellion because she couldn’t be bothered to shower… I mean, she “had an emotional awakening to the climate crisis“. Good Lord!
The contestants are split into two teams, with each set of six seeing one of them putting themselves forward as Prime Minister for that team.
They’re looking at how to improve education, each putting forward various policies, with Campbell and Warsi deciding whether or not these are viable.
In the end, it just feels like everyone talks over each other – sometimes shouting – and feels like The Apprentice, but even less serious.
Peronally, for me, one episode will be enough, even with the delightful Sue Perkins narrating.
Make Me Prime Minister begins on Channel 4 tonight at 9.15pm. After each episode is broadcast, it will be on All 4. The series is unlikely to be released on Blu-ray or DVD.
Presenters: Alastair Campbell, Sayeeda Warsi
Narrator: Sue Perkins
