The Matt Lucas Awards – cancelled?

matt-lucasBBC1’s The Matt Lucas Awards has reportedly been axed, after starting well in the post-10pm news slot in April 2012 with 2.4m, but then dropping down to 1.6m by the end of the second series in 2013. In the show, the Little Britain and Come Fly With Me comedian would ‘give out the awards that other shows don’t’ such as Smuggest Nation of People or Most More-ish Food, with guests including Susan Calman, Dave Gorman, and even Sooty, Sweep & Soo!

Personally, I was never a regular watcher of The Matt Lucas Awards, but I saw the occasional episode, depending on the guests, and found it quite entertaining. Trouble is, despite the fact that the BBC are a public service broadcaster and aren’t meant to chase ratings, it’s clear that they are. And they are dropping this because of low ratings.

However, Matt Lucas does have new comedy series due for 2015 – Pompidou – which will feature many characters and will be entirely dialogue-free – and you can see Matt introducing the theme here:
